Resurface Eyeballs

Resurface Eyeballs - a Lesson With Layer Masks
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This lesson demonstrates how to resurface eyeballs, to work along, download the eye and barcode Here.  Unzip the file and open the assets onto Photoshop’s workspace.  My lesson Here explains in more detail how to use Layer Masks.

Layer Masks for Beginners Here - Tutorial and Explanation!

My lesson here demonstrates how to make barcodes from scratch.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
Open your start images onto Photoshop’s workspace.

2/
Then activate the Move Tool and drag the eye image onto the barcode image.

3/
Now, set the default Foreground and Background - Black and White colours by pressing your keyboard’s D key.  Pressing your X key swaps the colours.
4/
Then ensure the eye layer is active, and click the following Add layer mask icon.

Comprehensive Layers Lesson Here!

Note
Ensure you work on the new mask layer when editing the image.

Remember!
Painting with Black removes the eye ball, and painting with White brings it
back!

5/
Activate the Brush Tool, and change the brush type to
Basic Brushes, and choose a Hard brush with a suitable Master Diameter (size). Now, begin painting with black to remove the white of the eye, and you will see the barcode layer beneath.

Tip
If you remove too much white, swap the Foreground and Background colours, and paint with White to paint it back.

Alternatively, to retrace your steps, from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Step Backwards.

Tip
For precision, Zoom into your image.

6/
Now, working between a white and black brush, (depending on whether you are removing, or painting back the eye ball), carefully, and slowly, remove the white of the eye. When you have completed the removal, ensure the eye image is active, then click the f-fx icon at the bottom of the Layers palette. Choose Drop Shadow from the list, and apply a drop shadow of your choice, (I chose Photoshop’s default settings). You will notice the woman’s (original) iris is not a perfect round - round it off with the brush, if you wish.

Tip
Keep adjusting the brush size as you work.

Note
Activate the barcode layer, and with the Move Tool, drag the barcode image upwards, to display its numbers at the bottom of the eyeball.

Tip
To replace the barcode background, (or any background you are working with), click the eye icon next to its layer. This removes the icon, temporarily, hiding the background layer.

Now, apply a new layer, fill it with a pattern, gradient or colour of your choice, and move the new (filled) layer to below the eye mask layer.

7/
You can have lots of fun experimenting with different background fills. However, remember, this technique improves with practise. When you have completed your effect, Flatten the layers and
save your work.
