This lesson demonstrates how to create metallic chicken wire.

You will find my comprehensive Layers tutorial here.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards.
Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open a New document and set the following attributes.

2/
Then press your keyboard’s D key to set the default Black and White swatch colours.

3/
From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Texture then choose Stained Glass. In the subsequent dialogue box, set the following attributes, then click OK.

For personal results, experiment with the Stained Glass settings.

4/
Now, activate the Magic Wand Tool.

And set the following attributes into its Options bar.

Then left-click once over a black area. All of the black (chicken wire) area should now be isolated with a selection marquee - as illustrated below.

5/
Now, from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Cut.

6/
Then from the Layers palette, click the following Create a new layer icon, to create a transparent layer above the chicken wire.

7/
Working on the top layer, from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Paste.

8/
Now, left-click to remove the Visibility (eye) icon of the Background layer - or delete the layer altogether.

Your chicken wire will now have a transparent background.

9/
To create the metallic effect, click the Create a layer style f-fx icon at the foot of the Layers palette, and choose Bevel and Emboss from the drop-down list.
Lesson. Experiment with the settings to create a bevelled look you like, or choose my settings, illustrated below. Don’t click OK.

Now, click the Drop Shadow tab, and apply the settings of your choice. I chose the following Drop Shadow settings.

When you like the look of your Drop Shadow and Bevel and Emboss settings, click OK.

10/
To create a metallic effect, press Ctrl then M to display the Curves Editor. In the Curves Editor, set the following curve, then click OK.
