This lesson demonstrates how to colour-tone black and white photographs. To work along, download my Tynemouth Life Brigade Watch House image Here. Unzip the file and open it onto Photoshop’s workspace. Alternatively, open your own image and convert it to black and white as demonstrated in my lesson Here.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/ Load a black and white image onto Photoshop’s workspace.
2/ Then duplicate it by dragging its layer over the following Create a new layer icon.
3/ Now, set the Background swatch to a toning colour of your choice. I set the following lime green. I do apologise for the brightness. 4/ Now, press Ctrl then your Backspace key. This fills the new layer with your Background colour.
5/ Now, (in the Layers palette), change the Blend Mode from Normal to Colour, then reduce the Opacity.
6/ To quickly change the tone, from the top menu, choose Image, then choose Adjustments then choose Hue and Saturation. In the subsequent dialogue box, adjust just the Hue and Saturation sliders, then click OK.

7/ When you are happy with the tone, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image, then save your work.
