This tutorial demonstrates how to create a dotted line from a Brush and a Custom Shape.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/ Open a New document with your choice of dimensions.
2/ Then set the Foreground to your colour choice.
3/ Now, activate the Brush Tool.
4/ Then press your keyboard’s F5 key to display the “hidden” Brush Palette. Under the left-side Brush Presets menu, click the Brush Tip Shape tab. Then click to activate the Hard Round 16 brush, and increase the Spacing to approximately 300%.
Your brush shape will now be dotted, as illustrated below.
Now, left-click and paint your dots onto the canvas.
Note Ensure the Spacing box has a tick inside it; and for personalised dots, always experiment with different sized Brushes and Spacing percentages. Higher Spacing percentages place the dots further apart.
Tip Press F5 to either display or hide the hidden Brush palette.
5/ To apply your dots in a straight line, apply your first dot; then press and hold the Shift key, and apply the second dot where you want your line to end. A straight line of dots will then be applied between the first and second dots.
6/ To stroke a Custom Shape with dots, first apply the Custom Shape of your choice.
7/ Then from the Layers palette, click the Paths tab. Then click the tiny arrow indicated below left - and from the subsequent drop-down list, click Stroke Path.

From the subsequent Stroke Path dialogue box, set the path type to Brush, then click OK.
Your path will now be stroked with dots - as illustrated below.
8/ By setting the correct Brush - and using Paths, any object can be stroked with dots. To stroke type with a dotted path, apply your type, then right-click it, and from the subsequent drop-down list, first click Create Work Path, then click Rasterise Type. Then stroke the Path with a dotted Brush - just as you did with the Custom Shape, back in Chapter 7.
Remember, the Path is a guide, and does not print.
