Create a Wax Seal

Create a Waxed Seal
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This lesson demonstrates how to create a wax seal - my settings are a guide, experiment with them - and create unique personalised seals.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open a New canvas and set the following attributes.

2/
Then set the Background swatch to a colour you want your wax seal to be. I set the following brownish-red colour.
Screen Capture!
3/
From the toolbar, activate the Elliptical Marquee Tool.

And set the following (New selection) attributes.

Then Shift-drag a circular marquee onto the canvas.

4/
Now, press Ctrl then Backspace, (this fills your circle with the Background colour). Then press Ctrl then D to remove the marquee.

5/
From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose Wave, and set the following Wave attributes - or experiment.

Your circle now resembles a wax seal shape.

6/
Now, activate the Elliptical Marquee Tool, and Shift-drag a circle inside the wax seal. Then left-click and drag the circular marquee to a central position.

Note
Make the outer lip of the seal narrower, if you prefer, by creating a larger circle.

7/
From the top menu, choose Select then choose Inverse.

8/
Then press Ctrl then tap J. This copies the selection (as a new layer) in the Layers palette. Note: You will no longer see the marquee.

9/
Double-left-click Layer 2, (the copied layer), and in the subsequent Layer Style dialogue box, click Bevel and Emboss (from the left-side panel), then set the following Bevel and Emboss attributes, or experiment!

Note
For a melted wax look, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Displace then choose Ripple, and set the following Ripple settings - or experiment!

10/
Now, click to remove the eye icon of - Layer 1 - this temporarily hides the layer’s visibility.
11/
Then press the X key to swap the Foreground and Background colours. The Foreground should now be the same colour as your wax seal.
12/
Now, activate the Horizontal Type Tool.

And enter your type attributes - I am utilising a font named Fairydust.
Type Tool Lesson!

Apply your initials, or initial, then click the Commit tick. Then reposition your initial with the Move Tool.

13/
Double-left-click the type layer, and apply a Bevel and Emboss filter to it - I chose the following settings.

14/
Now, click back the type layer’s eye icon.

Then double-left-click the type’s layer, and this time, in the subsequent Layer Style dialogue box - click Drop Shadow, and apply a Drop Shadow to the type. Again, experiment, and find a look you like!

15/
If you wish, apply a Custom Shape to your seal, (
Custom Shape Tutorial), and apply Bevel and Emboss and Drop Shadows filters to it - perhaps entwining a second initial, as described in my lesson Here!

16/
Then from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Merge Visible, and apply a Drop Shadow to the wax seal.

17/
Then again, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose New Fill Layer, and fill your new layer with either, a Solid Colour, Pattern or Gradient, as demonstrated
Here!

18/
Finish by cropping your work,
then link here to save it.
