Create and save gradients

This lesson demonstrates how to create, then save - a three colour gradient.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
From the toolbar, activate the Gradient Tool.

Then from the Gradient Tool’s Options bar, double-left-click the following Click to edit the gradient rectangle.

In the subsequent Gradient Editor dialogue box, decide what type of gradient you would like to create - you have a choice of Solid or Noise.

Now, double-left-click a Colour Stop marker.

2/
And click to set the colour of your choice in the subsequent Colour Picker dialogue box, then click OK.

The first Colour Stop now represents your choice of colour.

Now, repeat my previous steps, and set the second and third Colour Stops to your choice of colours. When you have completed this, you are ready for the next step,
proceed here.

Notes - Adding and Deleting Colour Stops
Add a Colour Stop anywhere along the oblong by left-clicking, as demonstrated below.

To delete a Colour Stop, left-click your choice; it will then display in the following
Colour tab. When you have the correct colour selected, click the Delete tab.

Solid dividing line
If the dividing line becomes solid.

Left-click the nearest Colour Stop, and move it to the right, or left.

3/ Tutorial Continued
Now you have created your gradient, you are ready for the next step.

Still in the Gradient Editor dialogue box, type a name for your gradient into the Name menu, then click the New tab. Your gradient will then be added to the end of your current gradient thumbnails. Double-left-click to set it, and it is ready to apply in the usual way.

4/
To permanently save your gradient, click the following Save tab.

And a Save dialogue box will open. By default, it displays Photoshop’s main Gradients folder, found in it’s Presets folder.

Your gradient has been saved to Photoshop’s Gradients folder; when you next open Photoshop, you will find it in the main Gradient list, as demonstrated below.

Click OK to close the Gradient Editor.

5/
To save space, instead of saving individual gradients, create multiple gradients and save them as one file. To do this, create, then save your gradients as explained at the start of this lesson. Now, from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Preset Manager, in the Preset Manager dialogue box, ensure the Preset Type is set to Gradients, then Ctrl-click to highlight your choice of gradient thumbnails.

Now, click the Save Set tab, and in the subsequent Save dialogue box, enter a name for your gradient set, then click Save.

6/
Delete, or rename gradients by right-clicking your choice, and choosing either Rename Gradient, or Delete Gradient. Alternatively, delete your created gradients from Photoshop’s Presets folder.
