 Create Silky Backgrounds
  Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Confident Beginners

This lesson demonstrates how to create silky smooth backgrounds.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards.
Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

From the top menu, choose File then click New, and enter the following attributes into the subsequent New dialogue box, then click OK.



If you are not printing your work, a Resolution of 92 Pixels/Inch will be fine.

Then press your keyboard’s D key to set the default Black and White colour swatches.

Now, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Render then choose Clouds.

Again from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Artist then choose Dry Brush. Set the following attributes into the Dry Brush dialogue box, then click OK.

From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose Polar
Co-ordinates
. Set the following attribute into the Polar Co-ordinates dialogue box, then click OK.

Apply the Polar Co-ordinates filter a further Three or four times.

Tip
Press Ctrl then F to quickly reapply the same filter.

From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose Wave. Set the following attributes into the Wave dialogue box, then click OK.

To add colour, click the tiny black triangle next to the following Create new fill or adjustment layer icon, and choose Channel Mixer from the drop-down list.

In the subsequent Channel Mixer dialogue box, experiment with different colour channels, and find a colour you like - then click OK. For my turquoise blue example, I chose the following settings.






Note
The Channel Mixer command has been applied as a non-destructive Adjustment
Layer
, therefore, prior to flattening your image’s layers, double-left-click the adjustment icon (indicated by the arrow below). The Channel Mixer dialogue will then reappear, enabling you to alter the colour.

When you are happy with your silk - and its colour, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image

To save your background as a pattern, from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Define Pattern. In the subsequent Pattern Name dialogue box, enter a suitable name, then click OK. Link
