When working with transparent object or canvases, there may be times when you run out of canvas space; for example, when applying Drop Shadows to images that have little spare transparent canvas space: for those occasions, this tutorial demonstrates how to Enlarge a Transparent Canvas using The Crop Tool. To work along, you are welcome to download the Transparent Ukulele Image I am working with Here. Unzip the file onto Elements’ workspace.
How To Utilise The Crop Tool
Undo Note You can step backwards at any time by clicking the top menu’s Undo Tool.
Please Note: Elements 8’s Orange Horizontal Bar The following Orange Horizontal Bar is exclusive to Photoshop Elements 8. Please link here to read my comprehensive Understand Elements 8, 9 and 10’s Workspace tutorial.
1/ Open your Transparent Start Image onto Elements’ workspace: File then Open.
Tip To centralise your image - snap it to the top menu’s orange horizontal line by dragging it towards it.
2/ From the left-side Toolbar, activate the Crop Tool.
Then left-click and drag out a Crop Bounding Box around your image, as illustrated below.
You will notice the Crop Bounding Box is surrounded by eight outer Rectangular-shaped Transformation Handles and one central Repositioning Handle. To enlarge the Bounding Box, left-click and drag out the top-right Repositioning Handle towards the top-right corner - as illustrated below.
Then drag the bottom-left Repositioning Handle towards the bottom-left corner.
When you are happy with the Bounding Box’s new size, commit the change either by clicking the green Commit tick, or by tapping your Enter/Return Key.
Congratulations, you have successfully enlarged your transparent canvas.
