Cut out Type

Cut-out Type Effects
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This lesson demonstrates how to create a cut out effect utilising two photographs. To work along exactly, you are welcome to download the start images HereUnzip the file and open the images onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards.
Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open the Fire and Water start images (or your own), onto Photoshop’s workspace, and with the Move Tool.

Drag the Water image onto the Fire image. Then to save PC resources, delete the original Water image. Your workspace and Layers palette will now resemble the following.

2/
Now, with the Water image’s layer active, press Ctrl then T. And using the subsequent
Transformation Bounding Box, resize the Water image so it fits the Fire image, precisely.

Note
Pressing the Shift key as you resize, resizes your image proportionally.

Tip
Expand your (layered image’s) grey workspace by dragging out one of its corners.

My resizing two images tutorial can be found Here
.

After you have resized your image, you are ready for the next step.

3/
From the toolbar, activate the Horizontal (or the Vertical) Type Mask Tool - they work in a similar manner.

And enter your type attributes into its Options bar. A nice chunky font works well.

My tutorial Here demonstrates how to utilise the Type Tool.
My tutorial Here demonstrates how to apply the Horizontal Type Mask Tool.

After you have placed, and repositioned your type - click the following Commit any current edits tick.

And your type will be outlined by a selection marquee.

4/
Now, press your keyboard’s Delete key. Then press Ctrl then D to remove the marquee. You have just removed the area within the selection marquee - subsequently revealing the underlying Fire layer.

Layer Styles
Prior to removing the selection marquee, further effects can be applied to the type, for example a
Layer Style - Drop Shadow and Bevel and Emboss, etceteras.

5/
There are many variations to this effect - you could apply a Custom Shape - then convert it into a selection marquee, or apply vertical type - experiment, and see what you can create.

My lesson Here demonstrates how to convert Custom Shapes into selection marquees.

6/
When you are satisfied with your cut out effect, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image,
and save your work.
