Hard Light Blend Mode

This lesson demonstrates how to add drama and contrast to coloured photographs. You will find the start image HereUnzip the file and open it onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

Open your choice of image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Then from the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose Desaturate
Remove colour lesson.

Important!
Press your keyboard’s D key. This sets the Foreground and Background colours to the default black and white.

To improve the contrast; from the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose Gradient Map, and set the following Gradient Map attributes, and click OK.

Duplicate the Background layer by left-clicking and dragging it over the following Create a new layer icon, in the Layers palette.

Now, (working on the duplicated layer), from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort, then choose Diffuse Glow. In the subsequent Diffuse Glow dialogue box, set the following attributes. Then click OK.

From the Layers palette, reduce the Opacity to around 50% and experiment with different Blend Modes, to see how they effect your photograph.

When you are happy with your effect, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image,
then save your work!
