 Create Multicoloured Distressed Type
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This lesson demonstrates how to create multicoloured distressed type.

My lesson
Here demonstrates how to distress images using brushes.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards.
Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open a New document and set the following attributes. If you are not printing your work, set a Resolution of 72 Pixels/Inch.

2/
Then extend its grey background by dragging a corner, outwards.

3/
Now, from the toolbar, activate the Horizontal Type Tool - and enter the type attributes of your choice - ensuring the colour is set to black. Note; I applied a star custom shape for the dot over my i.

The font I am utilising is Conventional Wisdom.

4/
Now, duplicate the type layer by dragging it over the following Create a new layer icon, and work on the duplicated (Copy) layer.

5/
Then from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Render then choose Fibres. (Click OK to the Rasterise Type prompt). Enter the following settings into the Fibres dialogue, box - then click OK.

6/
From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Artistic then choose Dry Brush. Enter the following settings into the subsequent dialogue box, then click OK.

7/
Now, from the top menu, choose Select then choose Colour Range. In the subsequent dialogue box, change the Select to Highlights, then click OK.

You have just isolated your type’s Highlights with a selection marquee.

8/
Now, press your Delete key to delete the highlights - then press Ctrl then D to remove the marquee. To view the deleted type, click to remove the bottom layer’s Indicates layer visibility eye icon; then click the eye back.

9/
Working on the top layer, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Texture then choose Grain. Set the following attributes into the Grain dialogue box, then click OK. Then press Ctrl then F to reapply the Grain filter.

10/
From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Pixelate then choose Mezzotint.  Set the following attributes into the subsequent dialogue box, then click OK. Then press Ctrl then F to reapply the Mezzotint filter.

11/
From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Sketch then choose Graphic Pen.  Set the following attributes into the Graphic Pen dialogue box, then click OK

12/
Now, activate the bottom layer.
13/
Then click the Add a layer style f - fx icon - and choose Gradient Overlay from the drop-down list.

Then from within the Layer Style’s Structure, change the gradient to a rainbow gradient by clicking open the Click to open gradient picker dialogue box - then click OK.

14/
Press your Shift key, then left-click to highlight both type layers, then right-click and choose Merge Layers.

15/
Your multicoloured distressed type is ready to utilise - perhaps by dragging it onto another image, or by creating a fill layer, and filling it with a Solid Colour, Gradient or Pattern, as described in my lesson
Here. Link Here to learn how to create a Perspective Shadow, and link Here to learn how to apply a Layer Style Drop Shadow.
