Create Dot Patterns

Create and Save Dot Patterns

Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

Normal Blend Mode
Overlay Blend Mode

This lesson demonstrates how to create and apply a dot pattern.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open a New document and set the following attributes.

2/
Then Zoom into your image, so you can see it clearly - I zoomed in five times.

3/
From the toolbar, activate the Pencil Tool.

And set the following attributes into its Options bar.

4/
Change the Foreground colour to dark grey.
5/
Now, (with the Pencil Tool), left-click to apply a single grey dot, near the centre of your transparent document.

6/
Then double-left-click your layer (in the Layers palette). In the subsequent Layer Style dialogue box, (from its left-side Styles menu), double-left-click the Drop Shadow tab. Set the following attributes into the subsequent Drop Shadow Structure, then click OK.

7/
It is time to create your pattern. Therefore, from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Define Pattern. In the subsequent Pattern Name dialogue box, enter a unique name into the Name box, then click OK.

Your pattern has been temporarily saved to your Patterns folder.

Note
My tutorial
Here demonstrates how to permanently save it to Photoshop’s Presets folder.

8/
Open a New document - (my size is 6 Inches Wide by 2 Inches High), and fill it with your choice of fill. Alternatively, download my gradient document
Here.

9/
Now, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose New Fill Layer then choose Pattern. In the subsequent New Layer dialogue box, accept the default settings, then click OK.

In the subsequent Pattern Fill dialogue, scroll to the bottom of your pattern thumbnails, and double-left-click to set your dot pattern. Note: The larger your image’s resolution, the higher the Scale needs to be. Additionally, for personal results, experiment with the Scale slider.

Click OK to apply your pattern.

Normal Blending Mode

10/
Now, working on the Pattern Fill 1 layer, experiment with the Blending Modes, and the layer’s Opacity. For example, if you would prefer a fainter pattern, change the Blend Mode from Normal to Overlay. Additionally, reduce the layer’s Opacity, if you wish.

Overlay Blending Mode

Congratulations, you have created and applied your dot pattern.

11/
From the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image, then
save your work.
