Border Fading

Create Border Fades (Vignettes)
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This tutorial demonstrates how to create a faded border and how to apply (then warp) type. My Create vignettes tutorial can be found here.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
Open an image of your choice onto Photoshop’s workspace ready to work with.

2/
Then from the left-side toolbar, activate the Rectangular Marquee Tool.

And from its Options bar, change the Feather setting to 20 Pixels.

Now, drag a rectangular marquee around your photograph - ensuring the area you wish untouched, is inside the marquee.

Moving the selection
After you have applied the marquee, left-click inside it and drag the marquee to a central position. Note: Before moving the selection, ensure New selection is active.

3/
From the top menu, choose Select then from the drop-down menu, choose Inverse - the selection marquee now forms a transparent border.

4/
Applying a gradient border -
Apply a Coloured Border Proceed Here!
To fill the transparent border with a gradient, from the left-side toolbar, activate the Gradient Tool.

And set the attributes of your choice.
Gradient Tool Lesson Chapter 6.

Whilst the border selection remains, draw a (gradient) line diagonally across the canvas - from bottom left to top right.

I began at the bottom left of the photo, as indicated by the arrow above, the following image shows how the gradient was applied - however, experiment with different starting positions.

5/Apply a white border

Change the Background swatch to a colour you would like your border to be - I am using white.
Lesson.

Then from the keyboard, press Ctrl then tap the Backspace Arrow - the inside of the border will become white - or whatever colour is active in the Background swatch.

6/
From the top menu, choose Select then Deselect, this removes the marquee.
(Ctrl then D).

7/
Then from the toolbar, activate the Horizontal Type Tool.

And set the attributes of your choice, into the Type’s Options bar. Type Lesson Here!

Then click the Commit any current edits tick after you have applied your text.

Now, click the following Create Warped Text icon.

Then click your choice of warp Style from the drop-down menu - I selected Arch.

And your text will warp accordingly.

Reposition the text, using the Move Tool.
8/
To apply an Inner Bevel or Drop Shadow to your type, (from the Layers palette), double-left-click the type layer.
Understanding Layers Tutorial.

In the subsequent Layers Style dialogue box, set your choice of Drop Shadow and Bevel and Emboss settings, then click OK.

Note
Before you can apply effects to type in Photoshop, you are prompted to rasterise your text, reply OK.

Note: I sharpened the final image of the emu with the white border (after first merging the layers).
My sharpening images tutorial can be found here

Your work is complete and ready to save.
