Fake Motion

 Create an Illusion of Speed

Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

Norman's Jaguar!

This lesson demonstrates how to apply an illusion of speed to a parked car, and you can download the Jaguar HereUnzip the file and open it onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Thanks Norman - love the silver Jaguar!

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
Open the Jaguar photograph, (or your own), onto Photoshop’s workspace, then zoom into your image - ensuring both wheels can be seen on the workspace.

2/
Now, zoom into the wheels further, if you wish, then from the toolbar, activate the Elliptical Marquee Tool.

And set the following New selection attributes into its Options bar.

Now, drag out an elliptical shape over the (nearest) wheel.

Then (whilst the Marquee Tool is active), left-click within the marquee, and drag the ellipse to the left, as shown below.

3/
To remove the ellipse that transcends the wheel, from the toolbar, activate the Polygonal Lasso Tool
Lesson.

And set the following Subtract from selection attributes into its Options bar.

Now, apply a lasso line around the area that exceeds the wheel.

As soon as you pass your cursor over the area where you began the lasso, left-click.

This has removed most of the extraneous marquee. Now, working between dragging the ellipse, and using the Polygonal Lasso Tool - position the elliptical marquee so it covers just the wheel, as shown here.

4/ Important!
From the Options bar, change the Elliptical Marquee setting to Add to selection.

Then surround the second wheel, with a marquee.
Note
With Add to selection active, you cannot click and drag to reposition the marquee, therefore, if you make an error, from the top menu choose Edit then Step Backwards, and reapply it!

When you have completed this, both wheels will be surrounded by a selection marquee.

5/
From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Blur then choose Radial Blur, I chose the following settings.

Click OK and the wheels will appear to be spinning.

Note
The strength of the Radial Blur depends on your image’s size, and the look you are seeking.

6/
From the top menu, choose Select then choose Deselect, this removes the marquee.

Note
At this stage, if you feel it is necessary, activate the Blur Tool and gently blur the harsh line between the Radial Blur, the wheels - being careful to blur just the line.

7/
From the Layers palette, right-click the Background layer, and from the
drop-down menu, choose Duplicate Layer. Click OK to the Duplicate Layer dialogue box, and ensure the Background Copy layer remains active

8/
Now, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Blur, and this time choose Motion Blur - and set the following attributes, or experiment! For personal results, experiment with the Angle and Distance settings.

For example
A Distance of 78 produced the following Motion Blur - the Angle remains at 30.

At present, the car is blurred, however, don’t worry, we will un blurring it soon!

9/
Because the blur is on an independent layer, we are able to un blur the car, very quickly. From the toolbar, activate the Eraser Tool, and set the following attributes -
Eraser Tool Lesson.

Now, working on the top (Motion Blurred) layer, apply the Eraser Tool over just the car. This removes the Motion Blur - revealing the un blurred Jaguar layer beneath. Experiment with different (Eraser) Opacity settings, to create an effect you like.

Continue removing the blur from the (top) Jaguar layer.

Note
As you move around the car, you need to alter the brush’s Master Diameter and Opacity, accordingly.

If necessary, blend the edges of the car with The Blur Tool.

10/
When you are happy with your result, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image. Your work is ready to save, or print.

Eyecandy Impact 5 Impact and Nature - Motion Trail and Smoke Effects

I finished the illusion of speed by (roughly) isolating the car with a marquee, (Polygonal Lasso), and applying an Eyecandy Motion Trail filter.

I then drew small marquees at the foot of both tyres, and applied an Eyecandy Nature Smoke filter. Apply Smoke Lesson.

My tutorial here demonstrates how to create wispy smoke, from scratch.
