This PaintShop Pro X4 tutorial demonstrates how to brighten shadows using PaintShop Pro X4’s new Fill Light/Clarity Filter. To work along, you are welcome to download the Start Image I am working with Here. Unzip the file and open the image onto PaintShop Pro X4’s workspace.
Fill Light/Clarity Filter Note PaintShop Pro X4’s new Fill Light/Clarity Filter lets you brighten shadows without changing the rest of your image. It's an easy way to draw attention to subtle details and increase the texture and depth of your photos.
1/ Open PaintShop Pro X4, and then click the Edit tab found at the top of the workspace.

2/ Then open your choice of underexposed Start Image onto PaintShop Pro X4’s workspace; File then Open - (Ctrl then O).
3/ Now, from PaintShop Pro X’4 top menu, choose Adjust then choose Brightness and Contrast and then choose Fill Light/Clarity. And from the subsequent Fill Light/Clarity dialogue box, create a good highlights and shadows balance by adjusting the Fill Light and Clarity sliders. And when you are happy with your brightening result, click OK.

Congratulations, you have successfully brightened your image’s shadows, and you are now ready for the next step.
4/ To smooth the graininess, from the top menu, choose Adjust then choose Add/Remove Noise and then choose Texture Preserving Smooth. And from the subsequent Texture Preserving Smooth dialogue box, smooth away the grain by adjusting the Amount of correction value. And when you are happy with the amount of smoothing, click OK.
Tip For personal results, experiment with PaintShop Pro X4’s other Grain Smoothing Filters.
5/ Congratulations, your work is complete and it’s ready to optimise and save.
