Action Framing

 Instant Framing using Actions
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

Splatter Actions Frame Drop Shadow Actions Frame

This lesson demonstrates how to automatically frame photographs using Photoshop Actions. Briefly, an action is a series of automated commands, meaning they can be be played back, and applied, with a single click of the mouse, or a few (prompted) clicks. For example, you can create an action that applies an Image Size command to change an image to a specific size in pixels, followed by an Unsharp Mask filter that re sharpens the detail, and a Save command that saves the file in the desired format.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
Open a photograph onto Photoshop’s workspace,
resizing it, if necessary.

2/
Ensure your workspace displays the Actions palette; by default, it shares a palette with History

Tip
If the Actions tab is not displayed, from the top menu, choose Window and from the drop-down list, click Actions - to place a tick before it.

Now, click the Actions tab to activate the palette.

3/
Then click the tiny black triangle, (highlighted in red below), scroll the subsequent
drop-down menu and double left-click Frames to set the Frames actions.

This is what your frame list looks like.
4/
Scroll the list, find a frame you like the sound of, and start the command by clicking the following Play Selection button.

Photoshop automatically applies the frame to your photograph, and because the splatter frame is a simply action, your not prompted to click OK. Some actions require you to repeatedly click OK.

Experiment with different frame actions to see their effects. With experience, you are able to record your own actions. Remember! apart from framing effects, there are different Actions to choose from, and actions are available to buy from various web
sites. Have fun experimenting with different actions commands.

Note - Selections
When a frame has Selections next to it, for the Action to work, you need to apply a selection marquee to your photograph, using the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Therefore, draw marquee around your photograph.

Then apply a frame that requires a selection, for example Recessed Frame (selection).

Click the Play Selection tab, and the action will begin rendering a recessed frame to your photograph.

Tip
To revert your photograph to its original (pre-frame) state, from the History tab, (next to the Actions tab), scroll to the top, and click a snapshot you wish to revert back to. This can be much quicker than clicking the Step Backwards tab.
