This tutorial demonstrates how to add atmosphere to photographs by applying a gradient map. To work along exactly, you will find the start image Here. Unzip the file and open it onto Photoshop’s workspace.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/ Open your choice of image onto Photoshop’s workspace.
2/ Now, press your keyboard’s D key to set the Default Black and White Foreground and Background colours.
3/ Then from the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose Gradient Map. In the subsequent Gradient Map dialogue box, click the Reset Gradients tab, then open the gradient library. And double-left-click to set the Foreground to Background gradient, as illustrated below - do NOT click ok.
Tip Experiment with different gradients to see how they alter your image.
4/ Now, click a dot into the Reverse box - at the foot of the Gradient Map dialogue box, then click OK.
You will notice the gradient has been reversed, producing an usual frozen landscape.
Experiment with different gradient maps, and when you are happy with the result, save your work.
