Glassy Type

 Glassy Type with Eyecandy
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

My lesson Here demonstrates how to create glassy/gel type without filters - this lesson demonstrates how to create instant glassy type using Eyecandy Nature Glass - that can be purchased from Alien Skin here. My Installing Plugins lesson is Here.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
Open a New document, and set your preferred attributes.

2/
Then from the toolbar, activate the Horizontal Type Mask Tool
Horizontal Type Mask Tool Lesson.

Play with different fonts (later) to see what works well with this filter!

Apply your type, then click the Commit tick.

The red rubylith mask is removed, and your type will be surrounded by a marquee.

3/
From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Alien Skin Eyecandy 5 Impact, then choose Glass.

4/
In the subsequent glass filter command, click Settings, and click a glass type you like the look of.

For an individual glass, click the following tabs, and play with the settings.

For reflective glass, click open Lighting, and ensure Select from file is active.
Now, click through the various choices, and see how they change the look of your glass.

Industrial Steel Beams changed my glass type to the following.

You can have lots of fun with this filter, take a little time to get to know it. After you have a glass you like, click OK.

Tip
For a deeper, glossier glass, apply the same glass filter twice, I applied it three times for the following look. However, be aware, if your glass has a drop shadow, multi glass applications results in a deeper drop shadow. To avoid a shadow that is too dark, with subsequent applications, set the Inner Shadow and Drop Shadow Opacities to 0.

Press Ctrl then D to remove the marquee.

5/
Now you have created your glassy type, there are many creative ways of displaying it. One way is to activate the Move Tool, and drag it onto another image. Alternatively, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose New Fill Layer, then make your choice of either, Colour, Pattern or Gradient. After you have created your new fill layer, drag it below the type layer - in the Layers palette.
