 Create Glowing Type
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This lesson demonstrates how to create glowing type using Photoshop filters.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
From the top menu, choose File then click New, and enter the following attributes into the subsequent New dialogue box, then click OK.

2/
Now, set the Foreground colour swatch to Black by tapping your keyboard’s D key.

3/
Then from the left-side toolbar, activate the Horizontal Type Tool.

Then enter your choice of type attributes into the Type Tool’s Options bar.
Step-by-step Type Tutorial Here!

4/
From the toolbar, activate Move Tool.

Then left-click over the type, and drag it to a central position.

5/
Click the tiny black arrow next to the following Add a Layer Style (f, fx icon) - found at the foot of the Layers palette.

My comprehensive Layers lesson can be found here!

And choose Bevel and Emboss from the drop-down list. Change the settings to the following example
Here, (or your own choice), then click OK.

4/
Now, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose New Fill Layer then choose Solid Colour from the list. In the subsequent New Layer dialogue box, click OK. In the Colour Picker dialogue box, click to set Black, as shown
Here, and your image will change to the following.

5/
From the Layers palette, left-click and grab the type layer, then drag it above the Colour Fill 1 layer.

And your image will now resemble the following.

6/
From the Layers palette, click the Add a Layer Style (f, fx) icon; and this time choose Outer Glow from the list. There are lots of outer glow settings to choose from, these are my settings
Here. Make your choice, then click OK.

For a narrower (or wider) glow, alter the Range, Spread and Size.

7/
To change your type’s background, on the Colour Fill 1 layer - left-click the eye icon, (to remove it). This hides the black background.

8/
Then from the top menu, choose Layer then New Fill Layer then choose either, Solid Colour, Gradient or Pattern. I chose a gradient from my collection.

I applied a Lens Flare, as described in Chapter 7 of my lesson Here. I then applied a Perspective Shadow. My lesson Here demonstrates how to create perspective
shadows using Eyecandy 5 - or from scratch.
