This lesson demonstrates how to create a vignette border fade utilising Gradients. To work along exactly, you are welcome to download the start image Here. Unzip the file and open the image onto Photoshop’s workspace.
Note When creating vignettes, the most important consideration is to create a fade that has no demarcation line between the image and the border fade - and with this in mind, Gradients are a perfect tool.
Alternative vignette tutorials can be found Here, Here, Here, Here, and Here.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette, or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way. 1/ Open your start image onto Photoshop’s workspace, then extend its grey workspace by dragging out one of its corners.
2/ Now, press your D key to set the default Foreground and Background (Black and White) colours.
3/ Create a transparent layer above the Background layer - by clicking the following Create a new layer icon - and work on the new layer.
4/ From the toolbar, activate the Gradient Tool.
Then left-click to activate the Foreground to Transparent gradient - and set the following attributes into its Options bar.
Tip Experiment with different gradient directions.
To apply the gradient, left-click over the centre of the image - then drag a gradient line in the direction indicated by the arrow below. Then release your mouse button.
As soon as you release the mouse button, the gradient will be applied.
5/ Optional To apply a coloured tint to just the vignette, double-left-click its layer, and from the subsequent Layer Style dialogue box, click either Colour Overlay, or Gradient Overlay. Experiment with different colours, or gradients to create an effect you like, then click OK.

Tip To fade the vignette’s intensity, from the Layers palette, reduce the gradient’s Opacity.

Tip To create colourful vignettes, instead of utilising the Foreground to Transparent gradient, apply a coloured gradient - then change the gradient layer’s Blending Mode.
Tip If necessary, remove areas of the Gradient Overlay with a soft, Eraser Brush.
6/ Congratulations, you have created your vignette - to finish, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image.
