Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3

This lesson demonstrates how to create, save and apply grid patterns.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards.
Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open a New document and set the following attributes.

2/
Then from the toolbar, activate the Pencil Tool.

And set the following attributes into its Options bar.

3/
Now, press your D key, to set the default Foreground and Background Black and White colour swatches.
4/
Then Zoom into your image - and utilising the transparent chessboard as a guide, paint the following cross design.

After you have created your black cross design, you are ready for the next step.

5/
From the top menu, choose Edit then choose Define Pattern. In the subsequent Pattern Name dialogue box, enter a suitable (unique) name, then click OK.

Your grid pattern has now been saved to Photoshop’s Patterns folder. Link
Here to learn how to permanently save your grid pattern. It is safe to delete the original cross design.

6/
To apply the pattern, open your choice of image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

7/
Then from the top menu, choose Layer then choose New Fill Layer then choose Pattern. In the subsequent New Layer dialogue box, click OK, and the grid pattern will be applied to your image.

In the subsequent Pattern Fill dialogue box, alter the Scale to create a suitable grid size, then click OK.

8/
You will notice the grid has been applied as a new (Pattern Fill), layer. To alter the grid’s appearance, working onto the Pattern Fill layer, alter the Layer Opacity, or the Blend Mode, until you find a look that suits your needs. I set the following Opacity and Blend Mode settings.
