Halftone Signature

 Halftone Dot-Pattern Signatures
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

Sharpened
Soft Focus
Blue Toning
Black and White Filter (CS3)

This lesson demonstrates how to create a halftone (dot) pattern signature. To work along, you are welcome to download the start image HereUnzip the file and open the image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards.
Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open your start image onto Photoshop’s workspace, then extend the surrounding grey area by left-clicking and dragging out a corner of the image.

2/
Then from the left-side toolbar, activate the Crop Tool.

And drag out a rectangular shaped bounding box over the area you wish to use for your signature, then press the Enter/Return key to complete the crop.

Tip
Whilst the crop bounding box remains, left-click and drag the crop box to its final position.

After you have cropped your image, you are ready for the next step.

3/
Duplicate the Background layer by dragging it over the following Create a new layer icon at the foot of the
Layers palette - then work on the Background copy layer.

4/
Set the Foreground and Background
colour swatches to two colours you wish your halftone pattern to be. For example, if you change the colours to the following.

After the Halftone application, your halftone pattern would represent the colour swatches.

I am working with black and white, and I have therefore set my Foreground and Background swatches to their default Black and White by tapping my D key.
After you have set the colour swatches, you are ready for the next step.

5/
From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Sketch then choose Halftone Pattern.
In the subsequent dialogue box, play with the Size and Contrast settings to create a pattern you like, then click OK to apply it. I set the following attributes.

Note: There are three different Pattern Types to choose from, Line, Dot or Circle
My tutorial
Here demonstrates how to create window-blind shadow effects from Halftone Line patterns.

6/
From the Layers palette, (working on the top layer), play with different
Blend Modes and Layer Opacities to create an effect you like.

After you have created your blend, you are ready for the next step.

7/
From the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image.

8/
Then again from the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then click your choice of colour removing (desaturating), filter. For example, you can either utilise CS3’s Black and White filter, the Desaturate filter, or the Channel Mixer. I am utilising CS3’s
Black and White filter. If you are utilising CS3’s Black and White filter, experiment with different colour tones.  Students with earlier versions can apply sepia
tones, as demonstrated in my tutorial
Here. To finish - depending on the look you are seeking, either Sharpen your signature, or apply a Soft Focus filter.

My Remove Colour tutorial can be viewed here.

9/
When you are happy with your signature, and you have
resized it further (if necessary), it is ready to save.
