This lesson demonstrates how to create, then save - a personal handwriting brush.
Create Brushes Tutorials Apply Brushes Tutorial
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way. 1/ To begin, write your signature onto clean line-free paper - I utilised A4 printing paper. Then introduce your paper into Photoshop, either by scanning it - or, if you don’t have a scanner, take a photograph of it, and upload it to your PC. After your signature has been opened in Photoshop, you are ready for the next step.
Tip It is preferable to use black pen - however, any colour to hand will do, as you can always convert it to greyscale in Photoshop.
2/ Now, unlock your Background Layer, then from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Transform, then correct its orientation as necessary - utilising one of the drop-down commands. (I chose Rotate 90 CW - anticlockwise).
3/ Now, surround your signature with a Crop Bounding Box, and expand the bounding box by tugging the tiny vector squares that surround it - as illustrated below. Then press your Enter/Return to commit the change.
4/ Then cop away the unwanted area around your signature.

5/ Now, from the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose Channel Mixer. By adjusting the Channel Mixer’s Red, Green and Blue sliders, you are looking to create the best possible contrast between the signature and its background - and for personal results, experiment with different settings. Always click a dot into Monochrome.
Note At this point, you may want to save your prepared signature.
Tip Darken your signature by applying a Sharpen filter - Sharpen Images Tutorial Here.
6/ After you have optimised your signature’s contrast, it is ready to save as a brush. Therefore, from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Define Brush Preset. In the subsequent Brush Name dialogue box, enter a unique name for your signature, then click OK.
Congratulations, you have created and temporarily saved your personalised signature brush. Link Here to learn how to permanently save your brush.
7/ To access your new brush, from the toolbar, activate the Brush Tool.
Then scroll to the bottom of your brush thumbnails, and locate, then double-left-click to activate your new signature brush.
8/ Now, open a new Document, and test your signature. Remember, your brush’s colour will represent the Foreground colour swatch - therefore, change the Foreground to your choice of colour.
