High Key Effects

 Create High Key Effects
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This tutorial demonstrates how to create a high key effect. To work along, you can download the image I am working with Here.  Unzip the file and open it onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
Open your start image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

2/
Then duplicate the Background layer by dragging it over the Create a new layer icon, and work on the duplicated layer. From the top menu, choose Adjustments then choose Desaturate.

3/
Create a Curves Adjustment Layer above the desaturated layer by clicking the following icon, and choosing Curves from the drop-down list.

4/
In the subsequent Curves dialogue box, create the following curve, then click
OK.

5/
Now, change the desaturated layer’s Blend Mode to Screen.
Blend Modes Explained.

6/
Then duplicate the desaturated layer, twice. You now have three desaturated (Screen), background layers. Note: Your image will be overexposed.

7/
Activate the top desaturated layer, duplicate it, then change its Blend Mode to Multiply.

8/
Now, activate the original photograph, (at the bottom of the layers stack); duplicate the layer, then drag the duplicated layer to the top of the layers stack, and change its Blend Mode to Colour.

9/
Then press your Alt key. (Keeping it pressed), hover your cursor over the line between the Curve Adjustment Layer and the layer beneath it, and left-click. You have grouped the Curves and Background copy 4 layers.

10/
Activate the top colour layer, then create an Adjustment Layer above it - as you did in Chapter 3. This time, choose Hue and Saturation from the drop-down list. In the subsequent Hue and Saturation dialogue box, increase just the Saturation to around plus +40 - and leave the Colourise tick box, unticked.

11/
To colourise the lips, first highlight all four desaturated layers by Ctrl-clicking each layer - below left. Then right-click and choose Link Layers from the drop-down list. Now, activate just the top linked layer, below right.

12/
With the Eyedropper Tool -
Lesson, sample pink pixels from the subject’s lips, to prime the Foreground colour.  Lesson.

13/
Now, activate the Brush Tool -
Brush Tool Lessons; and in the Brush Tool’s Options bar, change the Mode to Colour, and with a small, soft, round brush, carefully paint over the subject’s lips to bring back the colour.

Tip
To paint back colour over the bleached white lips, change the Mode to Normal, reduce both Brush Size, and Opacity - and carefully colourise the white area.

14/
You have created your High Key conversion. When you are completely happy with the result, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image, then
save your work.

Final Notes
Images will always react uniquely; for personal results, experiment with the settings I have mentioned in this lesson. Additionally, remove the background and
apply a studio background if you wish; Extracting Backgrounds Lessons Here!
