Liven Flat Images

 Intensify Flat Landscapes
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This tutorial demonstrates how to liven dull landscapes, by isolating, then altering - different areas of the photograph. You can download the image I am working with Here - it is Derwentwater - Keswick, England. Unzip the file and open the image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

Note
Photographs will always react uniquely, therefore, when improving your own
landscapes, experiment with the settings.

1/
Open your image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

2/
To begin, activate the Polygonal Lasso Tool -
Detailed Lesson Here. And set the following attributes. Feather settings depend on the size of your photograph.

Drag-and-click a lasso line around the foreground, as shown below.

Then pass your cursor over the area where you started, and left-click. Your lasso will change to a selection marquee.

3/
To lighten the area within the marquee - press Ctrl then L to display the Levels command. You will notice a lot of space to the right-side of the histogram - therefore, grab the White Point, and move it to the left. This lightens the area within the
marquee. Additionally, grab the Grey Point, and move it to the right, these are my settings. Click OK, then click Ctrl then D to remove the selection marquee.

Tip: Click Auto to see how that effects your image.

4/
Now, with the Polygonal Lasso Tool, surround the water with a lasso line - I did not change my Feather settings, however, you may need to experiment.

5/
To lighten the water, press Ctrl and L. In the subsequent Levels dialogue box - click OKAgain, click Auto to see it’s result. Then press Ctrl then D to remove the marquee.

6/
Now, surround the skyline and mountains, with a marquee.

7/
Then press Ctrl and L. In the subsequent Levels dialogue box, move the White Point to the left, and the Black Point, to the right, to lighten the area within the marquee. Click OK, then press Ctrl and D to remove the marquee.

8/
Surround the left-side of the image with a marquee.

Then press Ctrl and L, and this time, move just the White Point to the left. Click OK, then press Ctrl and D to remove the marquee.

9/
To alter Levels globally, display the Levels command, and move the White Point to the left, and the Black Point (slightly) to the right, then click OK.

10/
To alter the saturation, from the top menu, choose Image then Adjustments then Hue/Saturation. In the subsequent Hue/Saturation dialogue box, move the Saturation slider to around +16. Then click OK.

11/
From the top menu, choose Filter then Sharpen then choose a sharpen filter. My sharpening images tutorial can be found
Here. I applied the Smart Sharpen filter, and my settings can be viewed Here.
