Infra Red Effects

 Infra Red Effects
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This lesson demonstrates how to create infra red effects. To work along, download the start image HereUnzip the file and open the image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Note
Images will always react uniquely, therefore, when using your own, experiment with the settings. Additionally, for optimum results, choose an image that contains lots of blue or yellow, and green pixels.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards.
Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open your start image onto Photoshop’s workspace, then extend its grey workspace by dragging a corner, outwards.

2/
Now, from the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose Channel Mixer. In the Channel Mixer’s dialogue box, first click a tick into the monochrome tick box. Then move the Red slider to around +83. And move the Green slider to around +40. Now grab the Blue slider, and move it to minus 75. This darkens the sky, subsequently increasing the contrast. When you have a contrast you like, click OK.

Note
Always experiment with the Red, Green and Blue Channels sliders and find a look that suits your image.

3/
Press your keyboard’s D key to set the default Black and White Foreground and Background colours.
4/
Then from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose Defuse Glow.
You are looking to defuse the whiteness of the sunflower, whilst at the same time, adding grain. Therefore, in the Defuse Glow dialogue box, experiment with the sliders, and find a look you like. I chose the following settings.

When you are happy with the effect, click OK.

You have created a black and white infra red effect. If you wish, apply a colour tint to your image.
My lesson here demonstrates how to apply colour tints to black and white images.

5/
To finish, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image,
and save your work.
