This tutorial demonstrates how to add drama to photographs by Inverting their colours.
1/ To work along, you are welcome to download the Start Images I am working with Here. Unzip the file and open your choice of image onto Photoshop Elements’ workspace.
Undo Note You can step backwards at any time by clicking the top menu’s Undo Tool.
Please Note: Elements 8’s Orange Horizontal Bar The following Orange Horizontal Bar is exclusive to Photoshop Elements 8. Please link here to read my comprehensive Understand Elements 8, 9 and 10’s Workspace tutorial.
Tip To centralise your photograph - snap it to the top menu’s orange horizontal line, by dragging your photograph towards it.
2/ Now, there are different ways to Invert Colours; however by far the quickest is to press down your Ctrl Key, then simultaneously tap your Keyboard’s i Key.
Alternative ways of Inverting Colours, are: from the top menu, choosing Filter then Adjustments then Invert. Or, by choosing Layer then New Adjustment Layer then Invert. As well as creating a New Adjustment Layer, utilising an Invert Adjustment Layer lets you experiment with Blending Modes and Opacity settings - as illustrated below.
3/ Now, (if you have applied a Levels Adjustment Layer), from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image.
4/ Congratulations, your work is complete, and is ready to save.
Now you are familiar with this technique, you can have lots of fun playing with different Photographs, Blending Modes and Opacities.
