Understanding Layers
Understand CS4 & CS5’s Workspace And Palettes

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards.
Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette, or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
Open your Start Image onto Photoshop’s workspace: and extend its grey workspace by
left-clicking dragging out one of its corners.

2/
Then double-left-click the Background Layer - this unlocks it, making it editable.

3/
Now, activate the Crop Tool.

And crop your image, so the area you wish to convert to a Kaleidoscope is isolated. Then press your Enter/Return key to commit the crop.

4/
From the top menu, choose Image then choose Rotate Canvas then choose Arbitrary. From the subsequent dialogue box, enter the following settings, then click OK.

5/
Then from the left-side Tools Toolbar, activate the Rectangular Marquee Tool.

And enter the following attributes into the Tool Options Bar.

Then left-click and drag out a Rectangular Selection Marquee, over the following left-side area.

6/
Then press your Delete key, then press Ctrl then D to remove the Rectangular Selection Marquee.

7/
From the top menu, choose Image then choose Rotate Canvas, then choose Arbitrary. In the subsequent dialogue box, set the following settings, then click OKThis time you are rotating your (triangle) in an anticlockwise motion - and the canvas will be slightly enlarged.

8/
Further enlarge your transparent workspace utilising the Crop Tool: to do so, first drag out the Crop Bounding Box, then enlarge it by tugging each corner outwards - as illustrated below. After you have applied, then enlarged the Crop Bounding Box, press your Enter/Return key to commit the crop enlargement.

9/
Now, activate the Move Tool.

Then left-click and drag the triangular image up to your canvas’s top-left corner.

10/
Duplicate Layer 0, by pressing Ctrl then tapping the J key.

11/
And working on the duplicated layer, from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Transform then choose Flip Horizontal.

12/
With the Move Tool, reposition both triangles, as illustrated below. Then tap the arrow keys to nudge the triangles into position - as illustrated below.

13/
Press Ctrl - and hold. Then left-click both Layers, to highlight them. Right-click over the highlighted Layers, and choose Merge Layers from the drop-down list.

14/
Then duplicate the (now merged) Layer, by pressing Ctrl then J.  Press Ctrl then J twice more, and you will have four identical Layers - as demonstrated below.

Note
At present the Layers are copied on top of each other, and your workspace will not
change.

Tip
Saving your image as a .psd file, preserves its Layers. (File then Save As).

15/
Now, it is time to rearrange, and rotate/flip the layers, to form your Kaleidoscope. Therefore, leaving the very top layer untouched, activate the second.

16/
Then from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Transform then choose Flip Vertical. With the Move Tool, drag the flipped vertical triangle, so its tip joins with the upper triangle’s - as illustrated below.

17/
Activate the third Layer.

18/
Then from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Transform then choose Rotate 90 CCW. Then drag your triangle into position, as demonstrated below.

19/
Activate the fourth Layer.

20/
Then from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Transform then choose Rotate 60
CW
. And drag your final piece into position; tapping it into position with the arrow keys.

Tip
It is better to slightly overlap your pieces, rather than leaving gaps between them.

21/
Congratulations, you have created your Kaleidoscope, and it is ready to crop to size,
and save.
