Lens Correction

Vignette Border Fades using the Lens Correction Filter
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Beginners Plus To Intermediate

Original
Lighter Lens Correction Vignette
Darker Lens Correction Vignette

This lesson demonstrates how to create vignette border fades utilising the Lens Correction filter. To work along, download the start image HereUnzip the file and open the image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Note
When creating vignettes, the most important consideration is to create a fade that has no demarcation line between the image and the border fade, and with this in mind, the Lens Correction Filter is a perfect tool.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards.
Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
Open your start image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

2/
Then from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose Lens Correction. In the subsequent Lens Correction Editor, click to remove the dot from the following Show Grid box - found at the foot of the dialogue box.

Now, in the right-side dialogue area, you will notice a menu named Vignette. The only settings you are going to alter are Amount and Midpoint.

Amount
Left-click and grab the Amount slider, and either drag it to the left to create a dark vignette (Darken), or drag the slider to the right - to create a light vignette, (Lighten). Your choice will depend upon the requirements of your photograph, and the look you are seeking. Remember, vignettes are applied to enhance your photographs, not to subtract from them.

Midpoint
The Midpoint slider dictates how far the vignette encroaches into the photograph’s centre, and again - settings depend upon your image, and the look you are seeking.

The following examples demonstrate how to create darker and lighter vignettes;
however, it is important to play with the Amount and Darken settings to produce personal vignettes.
