This lesson demonstrates how to create a letterbox style seascape. To work along, download the image I am working with Here. Unzip the file and open it onto Photoshop’s workspace.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/ Open your image onto Photoshop’s workspace.
2/ Then from the toolbar, activate the Crop Tool, and crop your photograph into a letterbox orientation.
3/ Now, apply your preferred black and white conversion. I am utilising CS3’s Black and White Filter. You will find my Black and White conversion lesson Here.
4/ Apply a Sharpen filter of your choice. My lesson can be found in your Restoring and Correcting Photographs folder. I applied the following Unsharp Mask settings. Sharpening Photographs Tutorial Here!
5/ Now, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Blur then choose Gaussian Blur. In the subsequent dialogue box, select a Radius of 3.7 then click OK.
6/ From the top menu, choose Edit then choose Fade Gaussian Blur. In the subsequent dialogue box, set an Opacity of your choice, then click OK.
7/ From the top menu, choose Image then choose Canvas Size. In the subsequent dialogue box, enter a Width and Height for your border, and set the Canvas extension colour to Black, then click OK.
8/ Congratulations, your work is complete and ready to save - or to print.
