Lith Printing

 Lith Print Effects
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

Sharp Lith Effect
Softer Lith Effect

This lesson demonstrates how to create a high contrast Lith print effect. To work along, download the start image HereUnzip the file and open the image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Note
When using your own photograph, experiment with the settings.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards.
Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open your start image onto Photoshop’s workspace, then extend its grey workspace by dragging a corner, outwards.

2/
From the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments - and choose a filter to remove your image’s colour. I utilised CS3’s Black and White Filter.

My lesson here demonstrates different ways of removing colour from photographs
.

3/
Now, duplicate your image by left-clicking, and dragging it over the following Create a new layer icon.

4/
And working on the Background copy layer, press Ctrl and L to display the Levels dialogue box, and set Output Levels to 60, then click OK.

5/
Still working on the top layer, press Ctrl then U. In the subsequent Hue/Saturation dialogue box, click a tick into the Colourise tick box, and change Hue and Saturation to the following, then click OK.

6/
Now, click to remove the visibility (eye) icon of the top layer - then highlight the bottom layer.
Comprehensive Layers Lesson Here.

7/ High Contrast
Working on the bottom layer, press Ctrl and L. In the subsequent Levels dialogue
box, change the following Input Levels settings, then click OK.

8/
To create a higher contrast, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Sharpen then choose Unsharp Mask. In the subsequent Unsharp Mask dialogue, set the following attributes, then click OK.

9/
Now, click back the top layer’s visibility, and highlight it, (making it the active layer).

10/
Working on the top layer, change its Blending Mode from Normal to Multiply.

Congratulations, you have created a high contrast colour-washed Lith print effect.

Soft Focus
If you would like a softer Lith effect, apply a Soft Focus filter as explained in my lesson
Here. Experiment with the settings to create a softness you like. For my Stonehenge image, I set a Gaussian Blur Radius of 2.7, and lowered the Fade Gaussian Blur Opacity to 40%.

11/
When you are happy with the result, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image,
and save your work.
