Low Key Effects

 Create Low Key Effects
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This tutorial demonstrates how to emulate low key photographs. To work along, you can download the image I am working with HereUnzip the file and open it onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
Open your start image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

2/
Then duplicate the Background layer by dragging it over the following Create a new layer icon.

3/
Now, change the Background Copy’s Blend Mode to Multiply and reduce its Opacity to 50%.

4/
Whilst the Background copy layer is active, click the Create a new fill or adjustment layer icon, and choose Hue and Saturation from the drop-down list. In the subsequent Hue and Saturation dialogue box, move just the Saturation slider to minus 50. Ensure the Colourise tick box is unticked, then click OK. Now, change the Hue and Saturation layer’s Blend Mode to Darken.

5/
Whilst the Hue and Saturation layer is active, create a second adjustment layer above it, just as you did in Chapter 4. This time, choose Curves from the drop-down list, and in the subsequent Curves dialogue box, set the following gentle S curve, then click OK

6/
Then change the Blend Mode to Luminosity
Lesson.

7/
Now, activate the Background copy layer.
8/
Then from the top menu, choose Select then choose Colour Range. In the subsequent dialogue box, open the Select menu, and choose Midtones from the drop-down list, then click OK.

A selection marquee will isolate your photograph’s Midtones.

9/
From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Blur then choose Gaussian Blur. In the subsequent dialogue box, set the following attributes, then click OK.
Press Ctrl then D to remove the marquee.

10/
From the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image, then to darken the face and neck area, roughly isolate it with a selection marquee - using the Polygonal Lasso Tool,
Lesson - and a Feather of 2.

11/
Then from the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose Brightness and Contrast. In the subsequent dialogue box, set the following attributes, then click OK.

12/
Press Ctrl then D to remove the marquee, and
save your work
