 Design Greyscale Edge Masks
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

Paint Shop Pro Ripple Filter

In this lesson I demonstrate how to paint simple monochrome photographic edge.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
Note
You will be creating a black canvas that has a white border, you will then apply black paint to the white border, adding an artistic (worn) edge. Bear in mind, later in this lesson, you will render the frame’s black pixels transparent. Therefore, when creating your edge, think of the overall effect it will have, once it is applied to your photograph.

1/
Open your choice of photograph onto Photoshop’s workspace.

2/
Now, ensure the Background colour is set to Black

By pressing your keyboard’s D key, then pressing X.

3/
Then open a New document and set the following attributes.

4/
From the top menu, choose Image then choose Canvas Size. In the subsequent Canvas Size dialogue box, change the Canvas extension colour to White, and set the following Width and Size dimensions. This applies a White (150 Pixels) border to your black image; however, you can create a larger, or smaller border, by changing the Width and Height attributes.

Your canvas will be surrounded with a 150 Pixels (white) border.

Tip
To create dark edges, press the Ctrl key of the keyboard, then tap its letter i. This inverts the black and white colours.

Then paint your edge with White paint, instead of black.

5/
It is time to paint your design, therefore, set the Foreground colour to Black by pressing your X key.
6/
Then activate the Brush Tool.
Brush Tool Lesson!

Now, change your brush to an artistic, grunge-type brush-tip, this is fully explained in Chapter 3 of my Create Edges tutorial
Here. I am painting with the Star 26 Pixels brush, used in that tutorial.

After you have set your brush, the brush’s options bar will resemble the
following.

And you are ready to paint an artistic border to the black oblong.

Note: For personal results, experiment with different brushes, opacities, densities, and sizes.

Tip - Applying Filters
Now you have created a white border, you can isolate it with with a selection marquee, then apply distortion filters to the white border, as explained in my lesson
Here. For my circular mask below, I applied Paint Shop Pro’s Ripple filter to the selected white border. I then dragged the edge onto a photograph, then lowered the ripple border’s Opacity, to fade it.

You can download my Ripple mask Jpeg
Here.

7/
Now, begin painting onto the white border, as shown below.

Move around the border applying the paint, when you have completed this, your image will resemble the following. Don’t worry if your application is not perfect, imperfections add to the appearance - how you paint your edge depends entirely upon the look you are seeking.

8/
When you are happy with your edge’s appearance, link
Here to learn how to apply it to a photograph. In my lesson, (above link) you will learn how to drag the black and white image onto a photograph, and how to resize it. And how to change the Layer’s Mode, to Screen, to render black pixels transparent.
