This lesson demonstrates how to create a matrix style background.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool. 
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.  1/ Open a New transparent document, with the following attributes - ensuring Background Contents is set to White.
If you are not printing your work, a Resolution of 92 Pixels/Inch will be fine.
2/ From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Texture then choose Grain. In the Grain dialogue box, set the following (Vertical) attributes, then click OK.
3/ From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Artistic then choose Neon Glow. In the subsequent Neon Glow dialogue box, set the following attributes, ensuring the colour is set to 00ff33 Green, (or to a colour of your choice), then click OK.
4/ From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Stylise then choose Glowing Edges. Set the following attributes into the subsequent dialogue box, then click OK.
5/ Press Ctrl then J to duplicate the Background layer.
6/ And working on the duplicated layer (Layer 1), from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Blur then choose Radial Blur. Set the following attributes into the Radial Blur’s dialogue box, (or experiment) then click OK. My lesson Here demonstrates how to apply speed bursts.
7/ Optional Activate the Eraser Tool - Eraser Tool Lesson. 
And using a soft, round brush, carefully remove extraneous blurred areas.
8/ Optional For my black and white version, at the top of this lesson, I removed the colour by applying CS3’s Black and White filter. My lesson Here demonstrates various ways of removing colour. Additionally, Press Ctrl then U, and in the subsequent Hue/Saturation dialogue box, play with the Hue and Saturation sliders to change the matrix’s colour.
9/ When you are happy with your matrix background, it is ready to incorporate into your artwork. To save it as a pattern - from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Define Pattern. In the subsequent Pattern Name dialogue box, enter a suitable name, then click OK. Link Here to learn how to permanently save your background as a Pattern.
