Shiny Metallic Type from Scratch
  Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This lesson demonstrates how to create metallic type from scratch.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards.
Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

Open a New document and set the following attributes - or your own dimensions. 
Note: Set a Resolution of 72 if you are not printing your work.



Extend your New document’s grey workspace by dragging out one of its corners

Now, activate the Horizontal Type Tool.

And apply your choice of type.

Then from the foot of the
Layers palette, click the following black triangle next to the Add a layer style icon.


Then change all of the following Layer Styles, (in sequence), without clicking ok.

4/ Drop Shadow


5/ Inner Shadow


6/ Outer Glow

7/ Inner Glow



8/ Bevel and Emboss


9/ Colour Overlay


10/ Gradient Overlay

Note
I am utilising a Reflected gradient Style, however, Diamond works just as well.

11/ Stroke
After you have altered the Stroke to the following, Click OK.

Then from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Rasterise Type.

Press Ctrl then L. And in the subsequent Levels dialogue box, click the Auto tab. This lightens the metallic sheen.

Press Ctrl then M. In the subsequent Curves dialogue box, set the following curve, then click OK.

Note
Double-left-click a layer style, anytime before merging the layers, and alter its settings.

15/ Optional
To add colour, press Ctrl then U. In the subsequent Hue/Saturation dialogue box, click a dot into the Colourise box, then play with the sliders to produce a colour you like. Then click OK.

When you are satisfied with your metallic type, click to remove the Background layer’s visibility eye icon.

Then fill your type’s (now transparent) background, with either a Solid Colour, Pattern or Gradient as described
Here. Then from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image, and save your work.
