Image Intelligence for Easy Editing
Photoshop Elements 9 uses powerful technology to make even the most complex results achievable for anyone. Adapted from Photoshop CS5's celebrated Content Aware Fill feature, the content intelligence in the Spot Healing Brush analyses what's in the image and quickly de-clutters or repairs photos (like removing tourists from a crowded scene or an obstruction, such as a telephone pole) with a swipe of a brush, magically filling in the background. The same content intelligence synthesises missing pixel information to create a stunning panorama from multiple photos, without leaving any gaps or blank spaces.

In addition, the new Photomerge Style Match turns drab photos dramatic by analysing characteristics of any photo, such as contrast or colour tone and automatically applies those qualities to another photo, allowing users to easily replicate any photo style. Several new Guided Edit options walk users step-by-step through the process of achieving cool editing effects such as Out of Bounds, making an element of a photo appear to leap off the page in 3D, creating pop art masterpieces or retouching made easy via the perfect portraits feature. In addition, users now have access to
Layer Masks for compositing richly layered photos.

Organisation Made Easy
For the first time, the popular Photoshop Elements Organiser is available on both the Windows and Mac platform, to help users quickly organise, find and display photo and video clips from one convenient location. The Auto-Analyser takes the work out of finding the best shots by automatically searching a user's collection of photos and assigning a tag based on quality, such as lighting, focus or contrast. People Recognition also automatically creates People tags, so you can find your favourite people fast and it becomes more intelligent over time as it learns to associate specific faces with names.

Sharing Photos Virtually Anywhere
After users make their photos look better than ever, they have various sharing options, including posting photos directly to Facebook or creating one of a kind interactive Online Albums with animated templates. In addition, users can share their memories with personalised photo creations like scrapbook pages, photo books, calendars and cards that can easily be printed from home or via online print service providers. The flexible photo creation workspace allows users complete control over how they design their photo books, by automatically placing photos within a template or providing access to any Photoshop Elements editing feature from directly within the layout mode.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 Plus
For added convenience, now Photoshop Elements 9 Windows and Mac users have the option to purchase Plus, which offers 20-GB of storage for automatic online backup and sharing (up to 15,000 photos or four hours of DVD-quality video), as well as ongoing deliveries of new tutorials, artwork and interactive online templates sent directly to the desktop software. A benefit to all Photoshop Elements users is virtually anywhere access to photos and videos online or via select mobile devices at Photoshop.com.

A new Photomerge Style Match feature lets you specify a source photo and applies its qualities to another photo of your choice - for example, you can use a black-and-white photo as a source to create artistic conversions. You can use a few sliders to adjust the effect and two brushes to either remove the effects from portions of the image or add it.

Layer Masks is a new feature to Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and provides sophisticated blending capabilities. With a
Layer Mask, you can easily vary the opacity of elements within layers of your composition. That is to say, you can select, or mask, a portion of a layer, then reveal only that portion at, say, 50 percent. That ability helps create interesting compositions of multiple objects.

The Spot-healing Brush, already a powerful cloning tool for correcting blemishes and the
like, has also been updated, so you can now use it to remove large unwanted portions of images. For example, we used it to remove a person (me) from an image, even though we were standing in front of a pretty complicated background. It required several passes, but eventually we couldn't tell that we'd ever been in the picture.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 Organiser remains a separate application (it serves in Adobe Premiere Elements, too). When you want to perform substantive edits on an image in the organiser, you must select the image, click on a Fix tab, choose which editing mode you want to use, and wait for the editor to load. You'll then have two Photoshop icons in your taskbar - one for the organiser, one for the editor - and both applications' interfaces look very similar (with very tiny text and icons, by the way, even on a 24-inch monitor). Want to add tags to a photo? Use the organiser. Want to create a photo book from multiple images? Use the editor.

Another example. When you're done working on a photo in the editor, you can now click on a button that is supposed to let you share it on Facebook; but when you do so, it sends the image back to the organiser application to complete the action. Once you authorise the application to upload images, you can select one or more images, enter an album title and description, and Elements will compress and upload them to your Facebook account, with automatic posting to your Wall. That makes it much easier to post several photos at once.

The organiser's auto-analyser feature attempts to discern and categorise photographic characteristics such as the quality of the shot, whether it's in- or out-of-focus, and the presence of faces. The auto-analyser first appeared in the Windows version of Elements 8, and now makes its appearance in the new Mac version.

Elements 9 has new options to create things: For example, select some images in the organiser, choose Photobook from a menu, get sent off to the editor application, and Elements then prearranges the photos in an attractive layout that can be printed on your own printer or uploaded to Kodak Picture Gallery or Shutterfly.

Adobe offers a "Plus" version of Photoshop Elements; it costs a bit more and includes 20GB of space on Photoshop.com (up from the free 2GB allotment), plus access to a larger library of how-tos, artwork and templates within the Inspiration Browser that comes with Elements.

Although it has a few annoyances, for example, you cannot change the default dark grey workspace, Photoshop Elements 9 is a powerful, complete package that has many excellent Tools, Commands and Filters.
