This lesson demonstrates how to create an artistic, painterly affect. To work along exactly, you are welcome to download the start image Here. Unzip the file and open the image onto Photoshop’s workspace.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way. 1/ Open your start image onto Photoshop’s workspace, and extend its grey workspace by dragging out one of its corners.
2/ Then duplicate the Background layer twice, by twice dragging it over the following Create a new layer icon.
3/ Working on the top layer, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Blur then choose Gaussian Blur. In the subsequent dialogue box, set the following attributes, then click OK. The Radius size is dependent on your image’s resolution.
4/ Now, change the top layer’s Blend Mode from Normal to Darken. Layers Explained.
5/ Then press Ctrl then L. In the subsequent Levels dialogue box, lighten the pixels by changing just the Black and White Point sliders - then click OK.

6/ Now, press Ctrl, then left-click to highlight both the top and the middle layer - then right-click over the highlighted layers, and choose Merge Layers from the drop-down list.
7/ Duplicate the Background layer by dragging it over the Create a new layer icon, just as you did back in Chapter 2 - this time duplicating it once. Then left-click to remove the top layer’s visibility (eye) icon. Then click to activate the middle layer.
8/ From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Artistic then choose Cutout. In the subsequent dialogue box, set the following attributes, then click OK.
9/ Now, click back the top layer’s visibility (eye) icon. Then reduce its Opacity to around 50%.
10/ Press Ctrl then U. And in the subsequent Hue/Saturation dialogue box, add warmth by increasing just the Saturation - then click OK. Don’t click a dot into Colourise.
11/ From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Texture then choose Texturiser.
12/ To apply a painted border affect, download an Art Border Here. Drag it onto the thatched cottage image, and expand it so it fits precisely - using the Free Transform Command.
13/ Then change the Art Border’s Blend Mode to Screen.
14/ Congratulations, you have created your painterly effect. To finish, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image, then save your work.
