Paper from Scratch

 Create Paper from Scratch
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate Plus

This tutorial demonstrates how to create old paper - or card, from scratch; my lesson Here demonstrates how to create contemporary paper from scratch.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open a New document with the following attributes - set a Resolution of 300 pixels/inch if you are planning to print your work.

Note
If you are creating a post card, ensure the Width is 6 inches and the Height is 4 Inches.

2/
Now, set your Foreground and Background colours by entering the following RGB settings.
Lesson.

Foreground =  Background =
3/
Then press Ctrl then Backspace - to fill your canvas with the (darker) Background colour.

4/
From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Render, then choose Clouds.

5/
To add grain, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Texture then choose Grain. In the subsequent Grain dialogue box, enter the following settings, then click OK.

6/
Duplicate your layer by left-clicking, and dragging it over the following Create a new layer icon.

7/
Working with the duplicated layer, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Artistic then choose Dry Brush. In the subsequent Dry Brush dialogue box, enter the following attributes, then click OK.

8/
Now, working on the duplicated layer, change its Blending Mode from Normal to Multiply.
Blend Modes Explained.

9/
Then create a transparent layer at the top of the stack by left-clicking the following Create a new layer icon.

10/
Now, set the Background colour by entering the following RGB settings.

11/
Then press Ctrl then Backspace. This fills the transparent layer with the new (warmer) brown colour.

12/
Now, change the newly filled layer’s Bend Mode from Normal to Soft Light.

13/
Then from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Sketch then choose Water Paper - enter the following attributes into the Water Paper’s dialogue box, then click OK.

14/
With the top layer active, click the tiny arrow next to the following Create a new fill or adjustment layer icon.  And from the subsequent drop-down list, click Levels.

Note
The adjustment layer will be positioned at the top of the layers stack.

In the subsequent Levels dialogue box, enter the following settings into (just) the highlighted boxes, then click OK.

15/
Change the Background colour to the following Grey.

16/
Then create a transparent layer at the top of the layer stack - as you did in
Chapter 9. Press Ctrl then Backspace to fill the new transparent layer with grey - then change it’s Blend Mode to Overlay.

17/
Now, press your keyboard’s D key to set the default Black and White - Foreground and Background colours.
18/
Then from the toolbar, activate the Dodge and Burn tools.
Lesson.

Dodge Tool
With the Dodge Tool, you are looking to lighten areas of your paper; representing ageing. Therefore, set a large, soft brush, and click highlights over your paper.

Burn Tool
After you have applied the white highlights, activate the Burn Tool, and set the following attributes - choosing a soft, medium sized brush.

And carefully pass your cursor over the paper’s edges, to darken them.

19/
Working between the Dodge and Burn Tools, continue applying the highlights and low lights - adjusting the Dodge and Burn tools’ Exposure, as necessary. When you are happy with the result, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image. Now you have created your aged paper - or postcard, it is ready for the text and stamp. Additionally, you can apply rips and tears, as explained in my tutorial
Here.
