Example Montage

This lesson demonstrates how to create a photographic montage. You will find the start images HereUnzip the file, and open the images onto Photoshop’s workspace, ready to work with.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/
Open your images onto Photoshop’s workspace.

2/
Then minimise the flare and vortex-tunnel images, and activate the Mini Cooper. Now, double-left-click the mini’s layer, and reply OK to the New Layer prompt. The mini’s layer has now changed to Layer 0.

The Extract Filter
An alternative way of extracting the mini from its background, is the Extract Filter command.

3/
From the toolbar, activate the Polygonal Lasso Tool.

Now, Zoom into your image, and click a lasso line around the mini, to isolate it with a selection marquee.
Polygonal Lasso Tool Lesson.

4/
Then from the top menu, choose Select then choose Feather, and choose a Feather Radius of 1 pixel. Then click OK.

5/
From the top menu, choose Select then choose Inverse. The selection marquee now surrounds the car, and the image’s border.

6/
Now, from your keyboard, press the Delete key. This removes the car’s background. Press Ctrl and D to remove the marquee.

Tip
If necessary, tidy the mini’s edges with the Eraser Tool - using a very low Opacity and a soft brush.
Eraser Tool Lesson Here.

7/
Activate the vortex-tunnel background, and activate the Move Tool then drag the mini onto the background.

8/
Now, (working on the mini layer) from the top menu, choose Image then choose Free Transform, and rotate, enlarge and reposition the mini.
Transform Lesson.

Tip
To save PC resources, delete the original Mini Cooper image.

9/
From the toolbar, activate the Eraser Tool.

And set the following attributes.

Now, remove the centre of the windscreen to reveal the vortex-tunnel behind the mini. You are looking to reduce the windscreen’s opacity, not remove it altogether.

10/
From the Layers palette, right-click the mini layer (Layer 1).

And from the drop-down list, choose Duplicate Layer - then click OK in the subsequent Duplicate Layer dialogue box. Repeat this, and you will have three identical Mini Cooper layers, as illustrated below.

11/
Now, using the Move Tool, separate the three minis - they are currently on top of one another.

Then activate the Free Transform Tool, and reposition and resize two minis - placing them as shown below, or your own composition. Adjust their positions (behind, or in front of one another, for example) - by dragging their layers, in the Layers palette.

12/
Activate a Mini Cooper layer, then from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Blur then choose Radial Blur, and set the following (Zoom) attributes, then click OK.

13/
From the top menu, choose Edit then choose Fade Radial Blur. In the subsequent Fade dialogue box, move the slider to the left, (to find a suitable fade), then click OK.

14/
Now, activate the two remaining minis, and apply a Radial (Zoom) blur to them.

15/
Activate one of the smaller minis, then from the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose Replace Colour. Now, change the mini’s colour, as explained in my replace colour tutorial
Here. Repeat this, changing, the second smaller mini’s colour.

16/
Activate the flare image. (I created the flare with an Axion plugin). Then drag it onto the image. Note: The flare has a Screen Blend Mode, Screen Mode renders black pixels transparent.
Create Flare/Star Brushes Lesson Here.

17/
Now, to duplicate the flare, press Alt, and keep it pressed, Now, activate the Move Tool, and drag the flare to another part of the image. This creates a duplicated flare.

Repeat the Alt-dragging, until you have six flares, or your own choice.

18/
Now, rearrange the flares over the mini’s head lights, then activate the Free Transform command, and resize, rotate and reposition each flare.

19/
To adjust the flare’s colour and saturation, press Ctrl and U. In the subsequent Hue/Saturation dialogue box, adjust the Hue and Saturation sliders and find an effect you like, then click OK.

20/
I increased the Saturation of each flare to +100. Additionally, I increased the
vortex-tunnel layer’s Saturation to +42.

21/
When you are completely happy with the position of your elements - from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image.

I added more vibrancy by applying Alien Skin’s Exposure filter.
