This lesson demonstrates how to create a ghost car, with motion trail. You will find the car Here. Unzip the file and open it onto Photoshop’s workspace.
Car Trail Requires Eyecandy Impact.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/ Open your start image onto Photoshop’s workspace, then extend its grey workspace by left-clicking and dragging the top-right menu, diagonally, in an upwards motion.
And from the top menu, choose View then choose Zoom in.
2/ Now, activate the Polygonal Lasso Tool.
And set the following attributes into its Options bar.
Then click and stretch a lasso line around the car’s circumference.
Detailed Polygonal Lasso Tool Tutorial
Should you need to begin the line again; from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Step Backwards. Additionally (PC users), whilst applying the lasso line, to go back a place or two, tap either the Backspace or Delete keys. When you have completely surrounded the car with a lasso line, pass your cursor over the starting position.
And left click. The lasso line will immediately change to a selection marquee, as illustrated below.
3/ Now, from the top menu, choose Select then choose Inverse. The marquee now surrounds both the car and the outer border.
4/ From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose Glass, and set the following attributes.
The glass filter will be applied to just the car’s background.
5/ From the top menu, choose Select then choose Inverse, and the marquee will again isolate the car.
6/ From the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose Gradient Map. In the subsequent Gradient Map dialogue box, apply a gradient of your choice. Tip: Experiment with Dither and Reverse.
Click OK and a gradient overlay will be applied to the car.
7/ It is time for the Motion Trail; therefore, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Eyecandy 5 Impact, then choose Motion Trail. Click open the Settings tab, highlighted below, then double-left-click to highlight Factory Default.
Now, grab the black (square) repositioning node; this is positioned at the end of the motion trail line.
And stretch the motion line towards the top right corner - as shown below.
Do not click OK. Instead, click the Basic tab - and change the Taper slider to the following.
Then click OK. Press Ctrl then D to remove the marquee.
8/ To finish, from the toolbar, activate the Blur Tool.
And set the following attributes into its Options bar.
9/ Now, carefully one click at a time smooth away any sharp edges that surround the car.
Congratulations, you have created a ghost car, with motion trail - your work is now ready to save, as described here.
There are so many different textures, colours and filters that can be applied to both the car and its background; perhaps apply lightening spikes around the car - or water bubbles to the background, anything you like - play, and see what you can create.
