Create Silhouettes

Create Silhouettes and utilise the Pattern Stamp Tool
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

This lesson demonstrates how to convert coloured photographs into bit maps. Bit maps are images that contain just black and white pixels. To work along, download the image
I am working with
Here.  Unzip the file and open it onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
Open your start image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

2/
Then from the top menu, choose Image then Adjustments then Threshold.
In the subsequent Threshold dialogue box, move the white Threshold Level slider to a position that produces the best effect - this will be unique to your choice of image.

This is my result using a 128 Threshold - I used the same setting (128), for my yellow flower photograph.

I removed the dark areas at the top of my image by changing the Threshold Level to 98.

3/
To tidy the image, paint over the black and white areas with the Brush Tool. Therefore, activate the Brush Tool.
Brush Tool Lesson.

4/
Then ensure your Foreground and Background colours are set to the (default) Black and White - by tapping your keyboard’s D key.

And with a hard brush, (
brush tutorial), apply, either black or white to tidy your photograph.

Note
I am now working on my flower photograph.

After you have painted with black, click the following arrows to swap the Foreground and Background colours by tapping your X key.

Then paint with white to create a clutter free black and white image.
5/
After you have tidied your image, activate the Crop Tool - and crop your image to its best advantage.

6/
You can save your work as it is; alternatively, activate the Magic Wand Tool.
Lesson.

And with a suitable Tolerance, isolate the flower head with a marquee.

7/ Optional
Now, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose an artistic filter - I chose Filter then Splatter.

8/
Then from the toolbar, activate the Pattern Stamp Tool.

And search your Pattern library, (indicated below right), and find a pattern you like.

Tip
Ensure the Pattern Stamp Brush size is larger then the flower head - additionally, experiment with different (pattern) Modes.

After you have found a pattern, double left-click, to set it.

9/
Now, hover your cursor over your flower head, and left-click. Your flower should now be transformed.

10/
After you have filled the flower, from the top menu choose Select then choose Deselect. Complete the look by applying a frame, (
framing tutorials), then save your work. There is so much you can do with this type of image - experiment, and make your own
artwork.
