This lesson demonstrates how to create a cork notice board, and yellow reminder notes. To work along, you will find the start images, cork pattern and notice board items, Here. Unzip the file and open the contents onto Photoshop’s workspace. You will find the page curl plugin I am utilising (Mac’s Page Curl 1), Here. Download the file, unzip it, then copy and paste it into Photoshop’s plugin folder, as described Here.

Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/ Open your start images onto Photoshop’s workspace - then minimise the notice board items, and keep the cork pattern open.
2/ Now, open a New document, and set the following attributes - set a Resolution of 300 Pixels per Inch if you are printing your work.
3/ Activate the cork pattern, and from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Define Pattern. In the subsequent Pattern Name dialogue box, enter a name for your pattern (or accept the name already there), then click OK. Your pattern has been temporarily saved to Photoshop’s Patterns swatches - my lesson Here demonstrates how to permanently save your pattern.
After saving your cork pattern, you can safely close the original pattern file.
4/ From the toolbar, activate the Paint Bucket Tool.
And from the Paint Bucket Tool Options bar, click Pattern - as illustrated below.
Now, click open, then scroll the Pattern library, locate and double left-click to load your newly saved cork tile. Note It should be situated at the bottom.
Then left-click your canvas, to fill it with the cork pattern.
5/ From the top menu, choose Layer then choose New then choose Layer. In the subsequent New Layer dialogue box, accept the default settings, then click OK.
6/ Your Layers palette will change to the following; now, ensure you are working on the new layer - Layer 1.
7/ Now, activate the Rectangular Marquee Tool.
And set the following attributes.
Rectangular Marquee Tool Lesson Here!
Then drag out a small border, around the outside of the cork.
Tip In the Layers palette, left-click the eye icon (of the cork layer), this temporarily hides the layer’s visibility, revealing the transparency. The transparency (chessboard effect) serves as a guide for the marquee.
Hide Visibility Show Layer

Moving the selection After you have applied the marquee, left-click inside it and drag the marquee to a central position. Note: Before moving the selection, ensure New selection is active.
8/ After you have applied the rectangular marquee, from the top menu, choose Select then choose Inverse. The marquee will now form a border, around the cork.
9/ Activate the Pattern Stamp Tool. Pattern Stamp Tool Lesson - Chapter 8.
Set a pattern of your choice, and paint inside the selection marquee border, to apply the border of your choice. My Pattern Stamp Tool lesson (above), demonstrates how to use this tool.

I am applying an Eyecandy 5 (Textures) Wood (Default Knotty Pine) effect. I also applied a drop shadow - Drop Shadow tutorial - Chapter 6.
10/ After you have filled the border with a pattern; from the top menu, choose Select then choose Deselect. Alternatively, press Ctrl then D.
11/ Creating a yellow reminder note Now, open a Transparent image, 200 Pixels Wide by 300 Pixels Height, then double-left-click the Foreground swatch, and set it to yellow - Lesson.
12/ Activate the Rectangular Marquee Tool (Lesson) and drag out a post it size oblong marquee. Then activate the Paint Bucket Tool and change it to Foreground.
Then left-click to fill the oblong with solid yellow.
Tip To give the yellow rectangle a slight curve; from the top menu, choose Edit then Transform then Warp. Gently pull the tiny boxes to the left, highlighted below, and the rectangle will curve (warp) accordingly.
13/ Retaining the selection marquee, it is time to apply the page curl. You will have already installed the page curl filter into your plugins folder, as mentioned at the beginning of my lesson. Now, from the top menu, choose Filter, then choose Mac’s then choose Page Curl. These are my settings; however, experiment with placement and settings, and find a curl you like.
Then click OK.
14/ Press Ctrl then D to remove the marquee.
15/ To smooth the raggedness of the curl; from the toolbar, activate the Blur Tool.
And with a Strength of around 2 to 6, gently soften the edges.

16/ Crop the yellow note to remove wasted transparent space.

17/ Then activate the Move Tool.
And drag the yellow reminder note onto the cork board, Move Tool Lesson.
18/ Resize the yellow note with the Free Transform Tool, as described Here. Then apply a slight drop shadow to the note layer - Lesson - chapter 6. Now, reposition the note with the Move Tool, and smooth its edges with the Blur Tool, if necessary.

19/ Activate each corresponding layer (in the Layers palette), then drag - and resize with the Free Transform Tool, the push pins, pamphlet and notes, on to the notice board, then apply drop shadows. Remember, you need to move the push pin layer to above the yellow note layer; this ensures they appear on top of the notes. To give an appearance of the push pins penetrating the note; activate the Eraser Tool - Lesson, and gently remove the tips.
20/ When you are completely satisfied with the result; from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Merge Flatten. Congratulations, you have created your notice board; don’t forget to write a message on your reminder notes, using the Type Tool, with a nice handwriting font. I used a font called Jane Austen. To save your work, from the top menu, choose File, then choose a format to save your work in, my optimising and saving files lesson can be found Here.
