This tutorial demonstrates how to apply a Posterised Effect to a photograph. To work along exactly, you are welcome to download the start image Here.  Unzip the file and open the image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Understand CS4, CS5 & CS6’s Workspace And Palettes

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette, or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

Open your choice of Start Image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Tip
Expand your photograph’s grey workspace by left-clicking and dragging out one of its corners.



2/ Remove Colour - Optional
Now, from the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose Desaturate: (Shift + Ctrl + U).

Then from the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose Posterise.
From the subsequent Posterise dialogue box, experiment with the Levels slider and select a setting that is suitable for your photograph’s needs - then click OK.

Tip
To quickly scroll through the Levels, highlight the numerical value (as illustrated below), and whilst they remain highlighted - tap either the top or bottom Keyboard Arrow Key.
