This tutorial demonstrates how to create a mystical seascape photo conversion. To work along, you are welcome to download the (Cullercoats) Start Image I am working with Here. Unzip the file and open the image onto Paint Shop Pro’s workspace.
Undo Tip
You can quickly step backwards by tapping Ctrl then Z - (Ctrl then Y steps forward).

Open your choice of Start Image onto Paint Shop Pro’s workspace.
PaintShop Pro X4 Tip
Open PaintShop Pro X4, and then click the Edit tab found at the top of the workspace.
Then open your choice of Start Image onto PaintShop Pro X4’s workspace; File then Open -
(Ctrl then O).
Tip
Enlarge your image by double-left-clicking its top menu-bar.

Now you have opened your Start Image onto Paint Shop Pro’s workspace, you are ready for the next step.
Tip
Zoom into your image using the Zoom Tool. (Top menu, then View then Zoom In/Out).
Tip
Using the Zoom Tool, left-clicking enlarges your image, and right-clicking reduces its size.
I zoomed in twice.

Now, from the left-side Toolbar, activate the Freehand Selection Tool.

And from the Tool Options Bar, change the Selection type to Point to point. Then set the Mode to Add (Shift), and set the Feather to 0 - as illustrated below.
Now, you are looking to isolate just the water with a Selection Marquee. Therefore, press down your left-side mouse button, and click and stretch a Lasso Line around the water.
Then pass your cursor over the exact point where you began, and double-left-click.

Step Backwards
Whilst stretching the Lasso Line - and before the Selection Marquee has been applied: to
go back one step, press your Keyboard’s Delete Key. Press the key for however many steps you want to go back.
Cancel The Selection Marquee
To cancel the Selection Marquee whilst applying it: press your Keyboard’s ESC Key.
Double-left-clicking converts the Lasso Line into a Selection Marquee, as illustrated below.
Remove The Selection Marquee From Around The Protruding Rocks
To remove areas of the Selection Marquee from around some of the protruding rocks, first, Zoom right into the protruding rocks. Then change the Freehand Selection Tool’s Mode from Add (Shift) to Remove (Ctrl) - as illustrated below.
Now, carefully surround the protruding rocks with a Section Marquee, in the usual manner - as illustrated below.
Scroll Bars Note
Whenever necessary, navigate around your enlarged image using the right-side and bottom Scroll Bars - as illustrated below.
After you have isolated just the water with a Selection Marquee - as illustrated below: return your photograph to its original size. Congratulations, you are now ready for the next step.
Tip
Disable the Freehand Selection Tool, or the Zoom Tool by activating the Move Tool.
Save Your Selection Marquee To An Alpha Channel
If you like, you can save your Selection Marquee to an Alpha Channel as demonstrated in my online Alpha Channel Tutorial Here.
Feather Selection Note
You may wish to Feather the Selection Marquee. To Feather the Selection Marquee, from the top menu, choose Selections then choose Modify and then choose Feather. And from the subsequent Feather Selection dialogue box, enter a Number of pixels value of around 1 or 2, and then click OK.
3/ Tutorial Continued
Now, right-click over the Background Layer (in the Layers Palette). And from the subsequent drop-down list, click Promote Selection to Layer. The area inside the Selection Marquee will now be placed onto its own Layer - as demonstrated below.

It’s time to apply the Rainbow Colour to the selected sea area. Therefore, from the Materials/Colour Palette, click open the Foreground/Stroke Colour Swatch, and load a Rainbow Gradient of your choice.

Tip
For personal results, experiment with different Gradient/Foreground Colours, Gradient Styles and Gradient Angles.

Then from the left-side Toolbar, activate the Flood Fill Tool.
And enter the following Tolerance 200 settings into the Tool Options Bar.
Now, (still working on the Promoted Selection Layer), left-click over the selected sea area to fill it with the Foreground Gradient.
6/ Understand Layers - Understand Blending Modes
Now, to blend the solid rainbow with the sea, from the Layers Palette, change the Blending Mode from Normal to Colour (L) Legacy.
Changing the Blending Mode to Colour (L) Legacy blends the rainbow with the sea, as demonstrated below.
Tip
For personal results, it’s important to experiment with different Blending Modes and Layer Opacities.
Tip
Now is a good time to save your work as Paint Shop Pro Image File.

When you are happy with your rainbow blend, from the top menu, choose Selections and then choose Select None. (Ctrl then D).
Eraser Tool Tip
If you like, (working on the Promoted Selection Layer), you can remove unwanted rainbow pixels using the Eraser Tool. For precision, remember to Zoom right up close to your
work.

When you are happy with your work, from the top menu, choose Layers then choose Merge and then choose Merge All (Flatten).

To sharpen your image, from the top menu, choose Adjust then choose Sharpness and then choose Unsharp Mask. And from the subsequent Unsharp Mask dialogue box, enter settings of your choice, and then click OK.
(Paint Shop Pro 7, from the top menu, choose Effects then choose Sharpen then choose Unsharp Mask).

Congratulations, your Rainbow Seascape Conversion is complete and it’s ready to optimise and save.
Now you are familiar with this technique, you can have lots of fun creating personalised rainbow seascapes.
Rainbow Sky
There’s nothing stopping you from isolating the sky, and applying a gradient to it.
