In this lesson, I demonstrate how turn a photograph into a dramatic sunset/sunrise image. To work along, you can download the image I am working with Here - the image was captured by Peter Scarth and depicts the mouth of the Tyne - Tynemouth. Unzip and open it onto Photoshop’s workspace.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.
1/ Open your image onto Photoshop’s workspace.
2/ Then from the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose levels. (Tutorial). You are looking to improve the contrast of your image - thereby creating a silhouette effect. I adjusted the grey and black points as demonstrated below.
My settings slightly darkened the beach area.
3/ Click the Create a new layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette to create new layer above the Background layer.
4/ Working on the new layer, from the top menu, choose Edit then choose Fill. In the subsequent Fill dialogue box, click the Use menu and click 50% Grey, then click OK.

5/ Now, change the grey layer’s mode from Normal to Vivid Light. This displays your image again, and intensifies any changes made to it!

6/ From the top menu, choose Image then Adjustments then choose Hue/Saturation. In the subsequent Hue/Saturation dialogue box, click a tick into the Colourise tick box. This immediately applies a red hue to your image.
To further enhance the colour, experiment with the Hue, Saturation and Lightness sliders, I chose the following settings.
Note Final results depend upon your image’s contrast.
7/ From the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image.
8/ To apply a sun ray effect, activate the Polygonal Lasso Tool, Tutorial. Then with a Feather of (around) 7, draw a triangular shape, as demonstrated below.
9/ Then from the top menu, choose Image then Adjustments then choose Hue/Saturation. Grab the Lightness slider and move it to around +39.
10/ From the top menu, choose Select then choose Deselect, then save your work as described here!
