Reflections Heron

 Photographic Reflections
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

Ripple Filter Liquify Filter

This lesson demonstrates how to create a reflection from a photograph. To work along, you can download the heron image HereUnzip it and open it onto Photoshop’s workspace.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/
Open your image onto Photoshop’s workspace.

2/
The next step is to find out its exact measurements. To do so, from the top menu, choose Image then Image Size. In the subsequent Image Size dialogue box, find the measurement of your photograph. For instance, my heron image measures 288 Pixels Width by 156 Pixels Height. Now, open a New image, and ensure the width equals your pictures width, and the height is twice the height of your picture.
For example, I am opening a New (Transparent) image with the following attributes; meaning I am able to tile two copies of my heron image (vertically).

3/
Now, activate the Move tool.

And drag the heron onto the transparent image.

Then move it to the top.
4/
From the Layers palette, right-click the heron layer, and from the drop-down list, click Duplicate Layer. There is no need to name the layer, click OK. Your Layers palette will resemble the following.

5/
Ensure you are working on the duplicated layer, then from the top menu, choose Edit then Transform then choose Flip Vertical. Just the duplicated layer has been flipped.

6/
Now, activate the Move tool and drag the top (flipped layer) to the transparent area at the bottom of the image.

When it is correctly positioned, your image will resemble the following.

You have created your mirror image effect. To flatten its layers, from the top menu, choose Layer then Flatten Image. Then save your work. Alternatively, do not flatten the layers, and continue with this lesson.

7/
To apply a water effect to the mirrored layer, ensure it is the active layer, then from the top menu, choose Filter, then choose Ripple, then click OK.

As you can see, the centre of the image is a little disjointed. Link here to continue.

The Liquify Filter
Alternative to the Ripple Filter, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Liquify. In the subsequent Liquify dialogue box, set the following attributes.

Now, (quickly) pass your cursor over the image, from left to right - then left again. This produces a subtle wave effect. Familiarise yourself with the settings and find a look you like.

If you dislike the effect, either, Step Backwards and alter the settings - alternatively, click the Mode tab (below left), and choose either, Restore All, Rigid, Stiff, Smooth or Loose from the drop-down list.

8/ Continued
To rectify this, activate the Move tool and reposition the lower image.

9/
Tidy the image by activating the Crop Tool.

And crop away the transparent areas.

10/
Finish by flattening the layers, top menu then Layer then Flatten Image, and save your work, as described in my lesson
