Remove Colour

 Various Ways of Removing Colour

Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

Photoshop offers different ways of converting coloured images into greyscale, or black and white. Greyscale is a term used for an image composed of varying shades of grey; and Black and White is term used for photographs, or slides - that are composed of pure black and white.

Undo and Navigation Steps
Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.

Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,

or the Zoom Tool.

Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way.

1/ The Greyscale Command - a basic and quick approach
From the top menu, choose Image then choose Mode then choose Greyscale.

2/ Desaturate Command - a basic and quick approach
From the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose Desaturate.

3/ The Channel Mixer Command
From the top menu, choose Image then choose Adjustments then choose
Channel Mixer. In the subsequent Channel Mixer dialogue box, click a tick into the Monochromatic tick box. For my butterfly image, I set the following attributes, however, photographs will always react uniquely; therefore, adjust the sliders until you find a suitable contrast for yours.
