This tutorial demonstrates how to create retro art discs from photo objects, that can be incorporated into your artwork. To work along, download the start image Here. Unzip the file and open the content onto Photoshop’s workspace.
Note When utilising your own image, ensure it has a transparent background, (indicated by are chessboard effect), and ensure Height and Width are equal.
Undo and Navigation Steps Two ways of undoing steps are from the top menu, Edit then Step Backwards. Alternatively, click a previous snapshot in the History Palette.
Navigate (zoom in and pan) your image using the Navigator Palette,
or the Zoom Tool.
Activate The Hand Tool by tapping the Spacebar, keeping the Spacebar pressed, pan your image in the usual way. 1/ Open your image onto Photoshop’s workspace.
2/ Then from the toolbar, activate the Single Column Marquee Tool.
Now, left-click (and hold), over the top of your image, and before you release the mouse button, reposition the marquee to the left, or to the right - by dragging it.
Note When positioning the single column marquee, bear in mind you are incorporating a column that is one pixel wide, it is therefore important that you apply the single column marquee over coloured pixels, as demonstrated below - leaving no transparent gaps, other than the very top, and bottom.
3/ Now, right click your image, and from the drop-down list, click Layer via copy. You will notice the single column marquee has disappeared.
4/ From the top menu, choose Edit then choose Transform then choose Scale. A single vector transformation path will be applied to your image. Now, grab the centre vector handle and drag it all the way to the left, to spread the pixels - as illustrated below.
5/ Then again grab the centre handle, and this time, drag the vector path all the way to the right. The coloured pixels now fill the image’s width, as demonstrated below.
Press your Enter/Return key to effect the change.
6/ Then from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose Polar Co-ordinates. In the subsequent dialogue box, set the following attribute, then click OK.
7/ Finish by deleting the original bottle layer, and your design is complete.
Your retro disc is ready to incorporate into your artwork.
