This tutorial demonstrates how to revitalise digital images. To work along, you are welcome to download the Start Image I am working with Here. Unzip the file and open the image onto Photoshop Elements’ workspace.
Note
Photographs are unique and have different needs; therefore, experiment with the steps illustrated below, omitting steps if necessary, until you are happy with your result.
Undo Note
You can step backwards at any time by clicking the top menu’s Undo Tool.
Please Note: Elements 8’s Orange Horizontal Bar

Open your Start Image onto Elements’ workspace; File then Open: Ctrl then O.
Tip
Centralise your photograph by snapping it to the top menu’s orange horizontal line.

Now, from the Toolbar, activate the Crop Tool, and if necessary, crop away unwanted elements.

Now, from the top menu, choose Enhance then click (once), the following Filters: Auto Smart Fix, Auto Levels, Auto Contrast and Auto Correction.
Tip
If one of the filters produces an undesirable result, return your image to a previous state by clicking the top menu’s Undo Arrow.

Now, Duplicate the Background Layer by left-clicking and dragging the Layer over the following Create a new layer tab.

Then, working on the Duplicated Layer: from the top menu, choose Enhance then choose Adjust Colour then choose Adjust Colour Curves. Now, from the subsequent Adjust Colour Curves dialogue box, from it’s left-side, click the Increase Contrast tab, then click OK.
Tip
For personal results, experiment with the Select a Style and Adjust Sliders settings
6/ Optional Step
Now, still working on the Duplicated (The Top) Layer: reduce the Increase Contrast Colour Curve’s effect by lowering the Layer’s Opacity to around 90%.
Tip
For personal results, experiment with different Blending Modes and Opacities.

Now, from the top menu, choose Enhance then select a Sharpening Filter that is suitable for your image’s needs. For my cat Ben’s example, I have selected the Unsharp Mask, with the following settings.

To finish, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Flatten Image.

Congratulations, your optimisation work is complete and your image is ready to save.
