Smart Objects

 Utilising Smart Objects
Suitable for Adobe Photoshop CS CS2 & CS3
Skill Level - Intermediate

Smart Object for example

This tutorial explains how to utilise Smart Objects.

Smart Objects facilitate the embedding of raster - or vector data, inside your Photoshop documents, while preserving both the original features, and the data’s editability. This includes raster images, Illustrator artwork, camera raw files and Photoshop documents. Additionally, Smart Objects allow the application of non-destructive transformations/deformations to the embedded artwork.
Smart Objects provide many more creative options; preserving both quality and clarity of the imported data.

How to activate Smart Objects

1/ From Photoshop’s File Menu
To embed an external file as a Smart Object, ensure you have a document open in Photoshop, then from the top menu, choose File then choose Place.
In the subsequent Place dialogue box, find an image you wish to import, then click Place.

After your Smart Object has been placed, you can manoeuvre and transform it, as if you were using the Free Transform command.
Lesson.

This is how your Smart Object layer appears in the Layers palette.

2/ From Adobe Bridge
Open an image onto Photoshop’s workspace, then open Adobe Bridge. Now, highlight a photograph of your choice, and from Adobe Bridge’s top menu, choose File then choose Place then choose Into, and choose Photoshop.

3/ From Your Clipboard
If your clipboard contains vector data, paste the data into Photoshop’s workspace - then choose Smart Objects from the Paste menu.

3/ Smart Objects Layers
From Photoshop’s Layers palette, select a layer (or layers) to convert - then press Ctrl and right-click your layer, or layers. Then from the drop-down list, choose Group into New Smart Object. Alternatively, from the top menu, choose Layer then choose Smart Objects then choose Group into New Smart Object.

Smart Objects can also facilitate the application of two or more identical effects, to the same object, (or layer) - for example, Drop Shadows, Strokes and Bevels. To test this, apply a layer in the usual way, then apply a Style of your choice - now, right-click your layer, and choose Group into New Smart Object from the drop-down list, then apply a second Style - repeat this if you wish.
